After missing a salivating trip last year to Pulau Tinggi, I would not let go another trip organized by Malaysian Nature Society, Johor branch this year. Not many people can resist the temptation of eating fresh durian on a tropical island while doing bird watching. I departed home at 8am, driving alone and passed through Yong Peng, Air Hitam, Kluang, Jemaluang and finally reaching Tanjung Leman ferry jetting at 12:30pm. I stopped at Kluang to buy a squid lure which was not put into use since nobody brought a fishing rod and I don't want to be seen fishing in a Marine Park. After eating a beef burger at RM3.50 in the jetty canteen, I followed the gang and hopped into the ferry that took one hour to reac... read more

Well...let me begin by saying that it is important to do a little research before going to a different country, even if it is only a 40 minute bus ride from Singapore! Christa and I decided to do a day trip to Malaysia for lunch and due to our time restraints we decided to go to Johor...we then wake up this morning to find in the paper an article about how unsafe Johor is and the plague of violence and theft that has been happening there the past while. Don't worry mom and dad...we made it out fine. We had met a nice Singaporian man, Simon there who pretty much took us around to see all of the important sites of Johor and he made sure we got back to the bus station okay-what he ... read more

Day 298, 25th March Melaka - Muar - Batu Pahat We awoke at around seven, or was it eight, and went for a slap up breakfast dowstairs. This was the day that we would travel again together as one group, after 6 weeks apart. We packed our panniers, loaded our bikes, and - there was an amazing amount of arsing about before we set off just after eleven on our final leg… We had people from the hostel taking photos and waving us off as we left, it felt somewhat strange to me, I was just a guy on a bike, people at home don’t do this! Our route took us past the old part of town and onto route number 5 which ran south-east out of the city. It wasn’t long before Rory got a ... read more

Last night we got a decent nights sleep, the last 3 nights we've had a large bunch blokes decend on the place whom don't seem to have a problem with the idea that talking at full volume at 4 in the morning with a room full of unknown paying guests is possibly considered socially inconsiderate in most parts of the world. If it isn't - it should be. I eventually told them as much, but language barriers reduced my message presumably to something along the lines of - "I'm deranged and looking slightly annoyed". Either way it shut them up. I must be getting old... but I reserve my fundamental British Right of Subjectship, which is to complain (even if that is quietly and not infront of anyone that I might offend). We got up about ... read more

Malaysia, Truly Asia Our JB trip started late today. After meeting my friends (Yq and March) in Chinatown at 6pm, we proceed to drive up the causeway to cross the Malaysian border. March was doing this religiously every weekend, rain or shine because he could save 50% off his expensive petrol bills at his favourite Shell Station at JB's Taman Sri Tebrau. Like a typical weekend, the causeway was packed with vehicles - Malaysians rushing back home after a day's work and Singaporeans for their weekend seafood therapy. I do not know if the escalating crime rates in JB have deterred Singaporeans from visiting. All I know is that we were stuck at the Woodlands customs for a good 40 minutes before reaching the Malaysian border. It was about 7.45pm when we checked in the url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g298278-d302264-r5796526-The_Puteri_Pacific_Hotel_Johor_Bahru- ... read more

Crossing the causeway to Malaysia was quite easy. We hired a taxi that was able to do the cross border trip and got lucky enough not to have to get out and open our suitcases for a search. They just waved us through. Things seemed to be going smoothly. We got ourselves to the Hyatt in Johor to pick up our rental car, again planned out by Jo’s sister. The only thing was that the car wasn’t there where we we’re told it would be. Hmmm, okay we’ll just hang out a while. We finally managed to get the car delivered up to the hotel only to discover that we could have picked it up right by where the Singapore taxi had dropped us off. Two hours wasted, but no problem. We got on the road ... read more

Legs aching, still tired, but had to get up to get to airport for flight back to Johor Bahru on the Malaysian mainland. Had a farewell meal at the bus station in JB with Mark & Lynn who were heading off to islands on the east coast. We boarded a bus to Melaka. After arriving and checking out a few tatty places we stayed at the very nice Travellers Lodge. Our legs are aching so much we can hardly walk but we still manage to get to a big shopping mall for dinner at a Kenny Rodgers Roasters restaurant!... read more

Woke up early by the noisy chatter of the girls-only dorm. The hostel is nice but the walls don't go all the way to the ceiling, hence noise travels quickly. Checked out and took the bus for the huge sum of 2.4 Singapore dollars (90p) to Johor Bahru in Malaysia. After 2 checkpoints we lost the bus, then found another one which took us 5km out of town to Larkin bus terminal. We then realised we should have just ditched the bus after the border crossing as we were near the centre of town! Ate some lunch at a bakery in the bus terminal consisting of sweet buns containing anything from jam to hotdogs! Took a bus back to town and checked out a couple of places to stay as recommended in the Lonely Planet. The ... read more
