My luxury suite
Yes, it's a former brothel. I left home at 830 am, made my way into downtown Guangzhou, bought a bus ticket to Zhuhai, and made it to Macau customs by 130pm. It's amazing how something so close can still be so far away.
I took a taxi to my hotel. It's a former brothel in the former red light district. When they said that the rooms had character, they weren't kidding! My walls reach 80%!o(MISSING)f the way to the ceiling and if you bump them too hard, they move a bit. It's evident that they used to go only 50%!o(MISSING)f the way up, so I guess this is an improvement. But I do have my own sink and the room is pretty clean. I'm not quite sure how they think two people fit into the bed, since it fits one and a half of me at the most. The showers and toilets are down a flight of stairs and are new, though, so that's nice. And I guess they're renovating some other rooms with AC and private baths. I guess for 120 HKD/MOP I really can't complain, though. This
is Macau.
I spent the afternoon in Pacific Coffee company after stopping at
the travel bureau for maps and brochures. I took some time to divide the city into sections and created a plan to conquer. It's a walkable city, which is good, but because of the heat and my desire to relax, I want to make sure I take it slow but don't' miss anything. I'm quite charmed by this city. It's like being in a slow version of Hong Kong.
After eating a really cheap, tasty, and un-noteworthy dinner I treated myself to pink guava and black sesame gelato. I wandered the streets taking in the architecture, getting lost, and licking the gelato as fast as it melted. There's something marvelous about losing yourself in a city while eating gelato.
I decided to check out the casinos tonight... from the outside. I don't' gamble and all the noise and commotion in them is just irritating. Not surprisingly, they can be summed up as such:
Vegas + China = Tackiest thing I've ever seen
I took a few photos while wondering why people find them enticing.
I took the scenic route back to my hotel--meaning I got lost--and found a nice little park to relax in. Over
the tree tops the casinos glitter against the night sky. There's really not a lot of nightlife in Macau, I'm discovering, at least not like I expected. But for this trip, that's okay. I just want to relax.
***It should be noted that I posted quite a few photos here. In case you didn't catch it, when they restructured this website, they put a bunch of stuff in the middle of the entry, after the text ends but before the rest of the photos. Keep scrolling to enjoy more photos!
