Tuesday 19th January 2016 We left Luang Prabang after a great 3 days and were heading south to a place called Vang Vieng. We were collected by a tuk tuk driver at 9am and driven the short journey to the central bus station where we boarded our 'VIP' bus. There are a number of options available when taking this journey but all bus related. You can take the VIP bus which is basically a big coach, a minibus, local bus or a wagon with benches. We opted for the larger bus expecting it to be a much smoother ride. The word VIP was used to differentiate this bus to the local bus, which like buses at home will stop to pick people up. Once we had found our allocated seats and were ready to leave, the ... read more

We had booked a VIP bus to Vang Vieng and were told a tuk-tuk would pick us up for the bus station at 1.30 pm for a 2.00 pm departure. When nothing had arrived by 1.45 I asked the hotel receptionist to phone to check they were on their way. He said not to worry, they often turned up an hour late but would come eventually. And indeed, a 'people carrier' tuk-tuk did arrive, a 9 seater, with three young Korean girls and their luggage already on board. Multiple stops later we had collected a further 10 or so people, plus their luggage and fellow travellers were literally hanging from the rafters, clinging on for dear life. It was really dangerous but no-one seemed to mind and was our first taste of Lao punctuality and Health ... read more

Once the notorious party town of Laos, it drew swarms of young travellers from all over to lose their self in3 tubing, drinking, drugs and whatever else the town had to offer. It finally reached its peak in 2012, before the government shut everything down following a number of accidents and deaths involving travellers. With nothing else to keep the tourists coming, numbers dwindled and many guesthouses and bars were forced to close. With it beautiful scenary, huge karst mountains surrounding the river that run through this town it is understandable why people keep coming. Jumping to 2015, we arrive after a hairy ride on some thin foggy roads from Luang Prabang, in the underwhelming ghost town of Vang vieng. Even though there was a mix of western and Chinese tourists milling around, the town ... read more

With not much else for Vang Vieng to offer us, Kate and I decided to begin our descent of Laos. With not wanting to stop over again in the capital - Vientiane - the next obvious place seemed to be a small town on the west side called savannakhet. This would mean partaking in a 16hr coach journey to get there! So, after a lovely breakfast of my new favourite thing ( muesli and yoghurt) we booked our tickets at the tour company next door. Chilling out and buying a few foodie bits for the trip we got picked up at 1ish to be taken to the bus station - bus stations are rarely in the town centres here, instead anything up to 10-15km on the outskirts. Getting our seats on a coach along with about ... read more

After reading up a little bit on Vang Vieng and the surrounding caves we decided to go and see a few. So after breakfast Kate and i wandered down the road to hire a couple of pushbikes, as each of the caves was only a few kilometres out from town - and the exercise would do us good! For just over £1 for the day we rode off with a map on a couple of ok looking mountain bikes. Heading firstly in the direction of the blue lagoon cave. We turned off the main road and crossed a couple of bridges before joining a very off road road - More akin to a dusty, dirt track on the south downs way! After cycling for only 7km - but on those tracks and in the relentless 35 ... read more

Waking up and feeling much better after a good nights kip, kate and I decided that Vientiane didn't have a lot to offer and that maybe we should leave. So after walking to the end of the road to have some breakfast and then out to see the Mekong - which is a somewhat disappointing sight from the capital city, we booked our seats to Vang Vieng for 13.30. Grabbing some drinks and biscuits for the 4-5 hour minibus ride we were picked up sharp and then on our way. Sitting up front ( ive travelled in the back on enough roads in Laos!) it was quite an enjoyable journey. With the scenery dramatically changing from flat back to the lovely limestone hills of the north. With windy - but not too bumpy roads we travelled ... read more
