Vang Vieng Sai’s Uncle took us for a drive to Vang Vieng, it took about 4 hours to get there. Unfortunately, we got stopped by the Police about one hour out of Vientiane and they found that Uncle had neglected to pay his road tax on the van for some months and he was given an on the spot fine (or was it a small bribe?). It did not take us long to be back on the road, so we guessed it was not such a big deal. Being an optimist I decided not to ask Sai if we would be covered by any insurance if Uncle had an accident, I let that thought slip by with the scenery. We passed through many small villages on the route, as we got further from the capital the ... read more

We had read about Vang Vieng before we left for travelling, known for its main attraction, tubing. The area is actually quite beautiful but we arrived in a street looking like something out of Magaluf. Full of bars and shops selling the same crap, so touristy and gimmicky it makes you despise the place immediately. The bars and restaurants play seasons of family guy and friends for the “falang” and you will see more tourists than locals. Debbie summarised this area in one sentence “ two bob skeggy market”. After strolling around we found a guesthouse which was perhaps a little too close to the main street - the lady who owned it asked us if we wanted a balcony overlooking the street. We laughed and paid an extra 10,000 kip to have a room with ... read more

What was I letting myself in for? Was I going to love it or hate it? From Luang Prabang there is a road. Not any road though. A single lane mountain road with more twists than a curly-wurly. The views in the highlands were terrific but my utmost concentration was needed not to be sick. Every other turn seemed to be a 180 degree corner just like the Monaco Grand Prix. On the way, there were villages perched on the sides of sheer drops. Hundreds of children roamed the road. One child of only two at most was feet away from speeding vehicles. I was nervous every time we got too close. At one point, a cockerel was avoiding the traffic in the other direction. In its haste it did not realise our minibus heading straight ... read more

May 15th-18th After a crazy ass 7 hour bus ride south through winding roads up and down mountains, we finally made it to Vang Vieng, Laos. There was roughly 7 times on that ride i thought we were going to die due to heavy fog, small roads filled with potholes and nothing blocking cars from just flying off the edge, oh and random groups of cows/bulls just roaming in the middle of the streets. Anyways, Vang Vieng is a backpacker/tourist city now surrounded by more karst mountains with a river right through it. The first night we thought we were going to take it easy to get ready for a crazy day of tubing but soon we ended up at a “happy” or “magic” bar where I got pretty messed up. I wish i could tell ... read more

Woke up for our 9am kayaking/caving trip! We had a mini instruction on how to paddle through the rapids but it was hard to understand the guides so they just told us to follow them and do what they do! Too funny! I paired up with Ryan from USA who luckily was a strong paddler and he did good on the rapids! We had 1 kayak bail overboard in the rapids; it was Texas! It was beautiful scenery (even though we were in the dirty brown Mekong). After an hour or so we got to a cave where we got out and walked into the caves. It was a little scary for some as they had a couple of tiny flashlights, some people were given candles and you could still hardly see as it was so ... read more

Not in great form after my bday party last night; but not as bad as I had expected. Lucky for me my body needed some rest and for the first time we were spending almost a full day on the coach which we hadn’t really done yet. The drive was through very lush, turny, bumpy roads. I tried to sleep at the back of the bus but it didn’t happen. We had a lunch stop at a beautiful lookout spot. I felt funny about eating the lunch there as it was all the exact same food I had been sick off days before. Only able to eat a bit and still felt nauseous the rest of the bus ride. We had a few other bus stops along the way today. Finally got to Vang Vieng about ... read more

Tristan and I had made plans to go to the Organic farm in the morning for breakfast before returning our bike. We sat down and ordered and Candace & Duncan showed up shortly after. None of us were really impressed with the place. The food wasn't as great as Lonely Planet made it sound, and it was pretty pricey. We floated down the river today. We rented tubes. We went to a couple bars along the way then Tris and I got seperated from the group. We decided to just float on our own. It was soooo slow. At times the river didn't even move and we had to paddle with our hands. The tubes had to be returned by 6pm or else the company keeps your deposit of $7.50 per tube. It was getting close ... read more

We all woke up with a little hangover. We rented motorcycles and went off to see the Blue Lagoon. As we get on the bikes it started to pour rain but we continued on as it seems to only rain for a few minutes at a time. We went to get gas as the bikes were on empty and we asked for 1/2 a tank in each bike. He 'filled' up our bikes and never restarted the machine, and said we each owed 25,000 kip. We could see on the machine how much gas he put in which was a squirt into each bike, not what he was claiming. When we turned the bikes on they were all on empty still. He said our bikes must be broken, but we are pretty sure 3 bikes aren't ... read more

The van was scheduled to be tat our guest house between 9:00 and 9:30. You can imagine how surprised we were when he was there 10 minutes EARLY! Candance and Duncan hadn't even packed their bags as everyone gets used to everything being late, and waiting around. They frantically packed and we were in the van 15 min later. This van takes us to the bus station where we transfer into another minibus. The drive was twisty the whole way. We drove above beautiful canyons, and through Lao villages. Ladies were showering on the side of the road with no tops on. Chickens, cows and pigs were running everywhere. People were sitting under their homes enjoying the shade and having a good laugh with the neighbors. Children were butt naked jumping into the river smiling ear ... read more

After one of the worst nights sleep I'd had in a proper bed on my trip I woke up feeling really rough. Without being too explicit, I had eaten something in the last twenty-four hours that had massively disagreed with me and made me violently ill throughout the night. Clearly a day of drunken debauchery was not on the cards today in my dehydrated state and I wanted to do something with my one whole day in Vang Vieng. I asked the guesthouse owner if I was too late to book onto the kayaking and tubbing day that was advertised outside. Luckily, after a quick phone call, he said that I'd be picked up at about 9am. I went and bought a waterproof camera and a waterproof money pouch before going back and trying to eat ... read more
