How many times has anyone changed a tire over a 300km Journey? I'd bet the average is close to 1 or zero. A flat tire is a peice of misfourtune that, I thought, occured once in a while. On our journey from Vang Vieng we followed winding roads up through the mountains and got not one but, count them, four flat tires. Three hundred km in Canada is a breeze... 3 hours. We left at 10am and arrived in Luang Prabang at 7:30 pm. Not even the anticipated five hour journey. It was dark when we arrived so have have no idea what this city looks like... Loas in not like other Asian countries that are best seen by night (Korea, China etc...). It is dark and poorley lit so it's impossible to know what this place even looks like. I think we're still in the mountains ( we did alot of up, up, up and not so much down, down, down) and it is quite a bit cooler than we are used to (maybe 13c or 10c).
The long ride was beautiful. We travelled through the mountains for the whole day and gazing out the window was like watching the discovery channel. Unfortunatley, we only had one pit stop where we could buy food (the rest where road side tire changes), so by the time we arrived in Luang Prabang I was so hungry I could have eaten the ass end off a skunk.
Plans for tomorrow... shopping, herbal sauna, shopping. Then It's two days down the mekong.

Eating Skunk...
Hopefully, you weren't involved in changing any of those tires!!! Your "really roughing it" part of your journey will soon be over and you will be back among the Thai people once again. The North, I am sure is not as "Metropolitan" as the other parts of Thailand that you have already visited...but I am sure it is beautiful. Take care and keep safe. Sharron
