Thakhek has the crumbling, former colonial, 3rd world, atmosphere of an oriental Havana-on-the-Mekong. There were other forigners staying at the Thakhek travel lodge, but walking around town, we are definatly a point of attention, & have the feeling that people here do not see alot of forigners. This afternoon, we decide to walk to the river. On the way we meet our friend, that we met at the park outside the sitting-and-flirting cave. He is a college administrator here. He reminds us to stay by the river to catch the sunset. Seeing how much we loved the sunsets in Vientiane, we take his advice, & drink tea & eat pho (noodle soup) at a riverside stand until dark....... read more

Well, it's Wednesday night. We're in Tha Khaek. About 330km south of the capital, Vientiane. I only have few minutes but hope to update this more tomorrow or maybe the next day... WE have spent the last 3.5 days on motorcycles or more correctly, step-through 110cc motorscooters. It was great. Travelling through the Lao countryside of limetone karsts, open fields, small villages and very friendly locals waving at us or offering directiones if we looked lost or tired. It was certainly challenging (esp. if you saw the motorcylces we rented!!) but certainly worth it. Uh oh, time to go for now. And this keyboard is too hard to manage. More from Pakse - further south - tomorrow. Thanks for your comments! Hope all is well at home.... read more

We had an amazing bus ride from Vientiane to Thakhek. Crowded but ok. People come on the bus at stops selling goodies. We had baguettes and roasted corn, but passed on the grilled baby rats on a stick. Maybe next time. People are sooooo friendly and helpful to us. Children greet us with big smiles and Sabai dee's. It is very humbling. We went thru limestone karst mountains on a rented honda yesterday to visit caves. Leaving on a 3 day trek to a National Protected area tomorrow. Everything is good.... read more

Hello all!! yes, we are still traveling!! and having a ball! which is one reason we have not updated this in so long, the other being we just got lazy!!! Instead of boring you with every little thing we have done in the last 7 weeks, i thought we could just give you an update and bit of info on where we have been. It would just take to long and we know you all have lives to live to!!! Basically Vietnam was pretty cool. We spent lots of time in south on the beaches, and they were really beautiful!! We had one nightmarish overnight bus ride, both of us sick as and 12 hrs of tiny seats, aircon blasting the whole time and one guy snoring the whole time, just to rub it in!! Saigon ... read more

Sunsets and the Mekong and Beerlao all seem to go together, whether I be in the north or the south. First picture of the place that sounded less savoury than other Lao delights, yet has its own beauty away from town roads as this first snap shows. Travelling south has meeting very friendly people, especially children who are very happy to call out whatever English they know, be it "hello" or "thank you" or ... "i love you!" ... so I use this opportunity for a little language lesson and take a photo or two. They are usually a little shy but not for long ... as soon as they see their image, they become quite giggly and are ready to pose again. In one town someone has taught them to shake hands. Somewhere else it ... read more
