Hello all!! yes, we are still traveling!! and having a ball! which is one reason we have not updated this in so long, the other being we just got lazy!!!
Instead of boring you with every little thing we have done in the last 7 weeks, i thought we could just give you an update and bit of info on where we have been. It would just take to long and we know you all have lives to live to!!!
Basically Vietnam was pretty cool. We spent lots of time in south on the beaches, and they were really beautiful!! We had one nightmarish overnight bus ride, both of us sick as and 12 hrs of tiny seats, aircon blasting the whole time and one guy snoring the whole time, just to rub it in!! Saigon was amazing and we got to go to the cuchi tunnels and we both got to shoot guns!! I shot an AK 47 (5 bullets, and what a kick it had!) and dave shot an M16 with ten bullets. It was 1 place that made me want to come overseas in the first place, so it was a very cool day!!!! boo
It was nice to get out of that country though and into some real travelling, Cambodia. We just felt a bit like cattle in Vietnam, being ushered from bus to boat to train, back to bus, boat etc etc.
We did a mekong tour to get into Cambodia, which was a little tiresome, and not as impressive as we had thought it would be. The border was funny. We had to sit around in this "cafe" for about 2hrs waiting for the customs guy to wake up, check our bags and let us through. After about 2.5 hrs we were led by our "guide person" into the compound, past the room with the xray bag thing, where the customs guy was still asleep on the conveyer belt, and straight out the gates and we were in cambodia!! And that pretty much sums up Cambodia!! It really is an amazingly beautiful country. A little in your face at times, seeing the killing fields and the s-21 museum from the pol pot regime, not to mention the the amount of poverty and landmine victims everywhere you turn. But the funny thing about this country is how happy the people are!! Always
smiling, welcoming, and really funny!!! They live such simple lives, and i really dont think they would have it any other way!!
We hung out on the coast of Cambodia for a while, (just over a week), where we just hung out, ate good food, drank lots and soaked up the sun. We didnt swim much, the water was warmer than bath water, truly!!! Not refreshing at all!! This is also where we had our bag nicked, on our last night, by this bugger of a little kid!!!! Not happy Jan!! Not only was all my money in it, but yes you guessed it, our credit cards and Atm cards!! And let me tell you, the police are not excatcly helpful!! we had to stay an extra two days just to get our certificate of complaint, because the one guy who could help us wasnt there or he didnt have the keys to the office they were in!!!!
So, we finally got sorted and headed off again. We saw rare irawaddy dolphins in Kratie, found ourselves a surragete brother,( a really lovley 18yr old Brit) spent three days hanging out with remote Tampoon minority tribes (i spent my first
night in a hammock, which was so comfy!) where we hung out them eating and drinking (lots of potent rice wine) and a guide who was absolutely toasted the whole time!!!
We saw amazing waterfalls and touquise lakes that started their lives as volcanoes!!!! We saw jungle and spent days covered in red dust riding motorbikes and sweating mud!!! Angkor wat was insane!!! Better than anything i could of ever imagined!!!!!!! Way beyond any words that could ever be written, so, i will leave ankgor at that, you will just have to see it for yourselves!!! And to jen and erin, yes, we donated blood (for the first time for both of us) at the dr beat childrens hospital in siem riep, but didnt get to see the concert, he was overseas when we were there!! To everyone else, this is an absolute must do if you ever go, it is one of the rights of passage as a back packer!!!
And yes, Dave and I have made our first year!!! We spent the aniversary of our first kiss on the back of an elephant trekking through rubbertree plantations, surrounded in forest jungle!!!
The border crossing into Laos
The mud baths
Nha Trang, Vietnam was even easier than into Cambodia and we headed straight for the four thousand islands, with luke still in tow (he has been a godsend, someone else to talk to!!!!) and spent a couple of days lying in hammocks (we all have our own now!) cycling around the islands, seeing more waterfalls, reading eating, you know, all the tough stuff!!!
Then we bid goodbye to our lovely little bungalows, overlooking the mighty mekong, and headed for Pakse. Where we saw more waterfalls, including the 6th biggest waterfals in the world, which plummet 160m straight into a giant sink hole. Very very cool!!
We are now in Tahkek, after spending 9hrs on a local bus, chooks, ducks, goats, bikes and all!!! The 3hrs to sydney seems like a trip across town these days!!!
Tomorrow the three of us head off on bikes to do a 4 day loop through southern Laos. Yep, 3 bikes, our bags, ourselves and laos!!!!
So everything is going really well, a few bouts of sickness here and there, but all is good and everyday is great, even the shit stuff seems to be handled by us pretty well.
Hopefully we survive
the next couple of days, and we promise to try a bit harder in the future to keep these blogs a bit more up to date!!
Take care everybody, we miss you!!!
