We departed for Muang Khua at 11am on the five hour slow boat to Muang Khua, it was blissfully uncrowded :) We boat our tickets at the boat office (always the best way to avoid high prices and scams!), cost us 150,000. We got comfy seats and got chatting to an American couple who were on a trip for their 30th anniversary who gave us wanderlust for South America, Bolivia in particular :) We came across stunning scenery, water buffalo, fishermen and a real look into Laos rural life. We stopped off to collect some parcels and met some charming laos kids wanting to practice their English :) The rain came and it grew cold, so we cuddled up and got our blanket (always bring a blanket travelling). We were starving by the time we reached ... read more

I've always said to Steve that we shouldn't go to places we can't pronounce but that would mean that a lot of places would never get visited! We've struggled a bit with Laos - no-one understood our version (Layoss) but we adapted to Louse (as in hair nits) and it got better. I thought we might be OK with Phonsavan (well, the emphasis might be a bit dodgy but apart from that ...) but no. It seems the Lao language doesn't have an 'f' sound so words with a ph in them take the p sound and Phonsavan becomes Ponsavan. You live and learn .... After our experience on the VIP bus we decided to opt for a minibus as our form of transport on this occasion. We'd heard the roads were bad and twisty and ... read more

We had arranged to be picked up at 9.00 am for our trip to the Plain of Jars. As the brothel party, rowdy roosters and The Cockroach Commotion had done little to induce sleep the night before it was not too difficult to make an early start and we had had breakfast, got yet more kip from the ATM and booked our transport for the next day all before 8.50. There are three main accessible sites for the Jars but as we were having an exclusive guide and the third site was a distance away we decided to focus on just two of them and hopefully be back in time for a restful afternoon. Our minibus and guide were punctual (a first in Laos!) and after we had collected the guide's sister (we were never clear ... read more

My pickup finally arrived at Laos Haven Hotel, half an hour late, in a beat-up old bus. He dropped me off at the bus station where I was told as I was the only person travelling from Vang Vieng to Phonsavan that day, I had to wait for the local bus travelling through from Vientiane to arrive. I couldn't pin him down to an arrival time - 'sometimes early, sometimes late' is as good as it got. So, the ticket I bought for a seat on an air conditioned mini bus has now become a much cheaper seat on an un-airconditioned local bus, but nothing I can do about that. When it finally arrived, I was relieved to see one vacant seat along the back row, which I claimed, and I was the only Westerner on ... read more

Saw a flyer in need of a Native English speaker to volunteer in Phonsavanh, Laos. The ad was for volunteers to interact with kids who are learning English. Technically, I'm not a native English speaker, but close enough. I got in contact with Salithsay and arranged a volunteer date. I'd contemplated teaching english overseas the last couple of years. This was me dipping my foot in the water for the first time. The kids were very polite and greeted me with "Sabaidee." We spent a couple of hours going thru workbooks. Every now and then. I'd try to get interactive with them by acting out scenarios in the workbook. For the short amount of time these kids have been learning english, they actually understood what I said very well. I was quite surprised. Forming sentences ... read more

Beer Lao is the official beer of Laos. Backpackers can often be seen rocking a Beer Lao tank top, while tubbing in Vang Vieng. Beer Lao is a moderately light beer. I was having it with Chicken Biryani and it enhanced the roasted barley note of the beer. Great beer to cool you down on a hot day in Laos.... read more

I had Opium Wine today with a fella by the name of Vong. The wine was made from sticky rice. Opium flowers and roots were aged in the rice wine for about two weeks. Its commonly used as a painkiller. I was told that it would help alleviate painful joints. The wine itself taste sweeter than other wines I've had in Southeast Asia, but not to the point of labeling it as a dessert wine. It also has a leafy after taste. It gave me a good buzz and made me a bit sleepy. Locals in Laos are allowed to grow a small amount of Opium. It is legal to make wine with it, but not to smoke.... read more

The 30+ hours bus ride from Hanoi to Luang Prabang included a stop in Phonsavan. At the time, I didn't know that this would be my next stop. So, essentially I'm going backwards... Phonsavan is a small town located in the province of XiengKhouang, Laos. Its here that I visited the Plain of Jars. The Plain of Jars is where numerous jars ranging from 4-6 feet high, are dispersed throughout. The history of the jars dated back 2500-4000 years ago. There are several theories as to what these jars were used for. One was that these jars were used in the burial process. Deceased bodies were burned and ashes and remains were placed into these jars. Each jar had a lid to cover it, but very few lids remained. Another theory is that it was ... read more
