So for a day off in Karakol at 1700m, I found bumpy road south towards China over a 3700m col. That Alps are fun, but Himalaya have it x2. So at check point at bottom, just show passport, say U'r tourist & go where U want. Started with broken tarmack to gravel tracks, in some cases barely pushed flat across a gravel slide. Reducing tyre pressures made things go much better, 31/32psi, but really big horse fly found me in the 3min I stopped. Up and back by 4pm, just another 220km on trip.... read more

Cestou nahoru postupně odpadlo 5 ... read more

Geo: 41.6833, 72.9833What an amazing but exhausting day. We slept well, then had brekkies about 8:30. As soon as we were done, we started up the pass. The way was slow and thought. We began walking up a shale slope, but the slope soon was nearly vertical. We leaned into the mountain and grabbed the shale with our hands, trying not to slip down or fall backwards. We slid back a step for every two forward. It became slightly easier going when we hit the snow, because we could dig steps in. Three porters went ahead of us, for fun, we think. At the top we could see cornices of snow, waiting to fall on us. After a solid hour of scrambling, slipping, climbing, sliding, pausing to catch our breath, we made it! The pass is ... read more

Geo: 41.6833, 72.9833I slept well. We woke just before 7am and had a good breakfast. Pas was feeling much better after a good night's warm slsleepwear started hiking about 8:30. The trail to begin with was along the grassy valley, then we started to climb up, up, up, through grass and mud, following stock trails. It was warm, and we peeled layer after layer. We were amazed at how high the stock trails went. And we passed one horse camp around 3000m. After lunch, it grew overcast, so we bundled up again and braced against the slight snow and strong wind. Such a contrast from the previous hour. I felt myself growing winded from the altitude, but we continued to climb. From the point our guide said it would be two and a half or three ... read more

Geo: 41.6833, 72.9833The next day, we woke to 5-7 inches of snow on the ground...and on our tents. The pass looked stormy, and pas was still not feeling well. After much discussion, we decided that pas had to go to lower elevation, and, given the bad weather, we could not split the team. Given that the pass was probably covered in waist high snow, we decided to all return to lower elevations and see if we could hire a truck to rescue us. The first part of the hike down was all through the snow, then through the mud. The views were completely different from yesterday. We stopped for lunch where we had left the truck yesterday. Some children at the house nearby brought their dogs for us to play with. Then, we continued down the ... read more

Geo: 41.6833, 72.9833After a hearty breakfast of porridge, fruit, and eggs, we climbed in an old army truck, dating from soviet times, to head 45km to our trailhead. The first part of the drive was on paved roads, but then we turned up a long, muddy road, past yurts and herds of horses, to the trailhead. The porter divided our belongings. We started up the trail first. As soon as we began, the snow began to fall. Hard. The were soon covered in white powder. Better than rain, though. The trail passed through a narrow canyon, lined with trees, with a stream gushing down the center. After an hour and a half of hiking, we stopped for a picnic lunch near a meadow with a cabin and yurt. The residents had just passed us with their ... read more

Geo: 41.6833, 72.9833Because more rain was predicted than we really prepared for (being the optimists we are), we decided to go to an outfitters to buy some more rain gear. Prices were good, so we actually bought a bit more than we needed, but I got things for which I have no current equivalent. Then, we stopped at the pharmacy to see if we could get a new glucose meter for Kyla, as her current one is acting erratically and her backup has an error message. But, they have totally different brands, so we decided not to get one. We did buy cold medicine, however. Then, out to the highway, which is a nice smooth dual carriage way almost all the way to the entrance of the gorge. This gorge cuts through red rock, with a river ... read more
