Travelling Kyrgyzstan in April is like a big bosomed lady at the end of an aisle standing there in her wedding dress. Covered in white, you know if you commit to it, you can ski on those slopes and (unlike the feelings on a wedding night) soon it will be gone. It dangles its goodies with its curvaceous roads attached to its mountainous mould - And like the lady, it shows you this just in case you change your mind. But that’s the dilemma I had once I got here. I was like the husband to be, having second thoughts. If I turn back now I could conquer something else. And maybe after an apology can mend things up and come back some other time. Changing my mind was seriously thought of but I didn’t go ... read more

After 2 months of predeployment in Fort Bragg, everyone was anxious to get to our destination. We left Fort Bragg and stopped in Leipzig, Germany to refuel. From there we flew to Manas Air Force Base in Kyrgyzstan on what was my birthday, in southwest Asia just north of Afghanistan. So both our stops were in what use to be communist East Germany and the former Soviet Union. Go figure. The scenery there was gorgeous, but it wasn't long after we left that the Kyrgyz Parliament voted to close the base after the they and the U.S. failed to agree on a higher rent for the property. We arrived in Kabul, Afghanistan on December 10, and from there our unit started getting split apart. I ended up going to Camp Lightning by Gardez for 2 weeks, ... read more

DEUTSCHE VERSION SIEHE UNTEN ;-) Day 95 to 113 17,400 km from Galway This time we start our blog in English as some haven't realised so far that we have all our blogs in German AND in English. Just scroll down in the other blogs to see the English version ;-) After this necessary detour to Almaty we eventually took off to Kyrgyzstan (KG). We were really looking forward to discover this country. After all the Kazakh steppe without any real highlights, KG should have much more to offer for a change. With a big smile in our faces we rode towards the borderpost and actually we crossed it pretty quick. At the Kazakh side we should park the bike go to the pedestrian passport control. After that we should collect the bike again and ... read more

After months of planning, fretting; tackling rental agreements; visas, train times; tickets and packing the house up, we're finally off! Having said our fond farewells to the family and been waved off at St. Pancras by Pens brother Geoff, we spent the next 48 hours rolling slowly across western europe. The greatest novelty on this leg, apart from the toilet and the samovar, was when our train sidled into a siding for a change of wheel gauge at the Polish/Belarus border. It was literally jacked up whilst we were on it, the wheels slipped from under us and replaced - a fittning reminder of the transition from the West to the former Soviet Bloc. We pulled into Moscow at about 11am on saturday, August 23rd, and our first task was to find the station that our train ... read more

We drove for around 3hrs from Kochkor to Bishkek. It was strange coming into Bishkek as it was quite a built up town with a whole range of faces and body types. Far away from the Uighurs and the Han Chinese. We had lunch down at the German Beer House. The power was off (they turn it off for 6hrs every day) so we had a choice of different types of sausages and that was all. Sausage it was! The hotel had a pool and it was really warm out so the rest of the afternoon was me teaching Lucy and Caroline Synchronised swimming and laughing a lot! That was pretty much how we spent time in Bishkek. We visited the Zum store - wandered around a bit. It was their National Day on the 31st ... read more

We left Narryn after breakfast and headed for Kochkor . Great Scenery all along the way. Kochkor is one of the three major centres (Kochkor, Bishkek and Osh). We tried to change money here as we were too late for the banks when we got to Naryn. Alas, the bank teller was on their lunch break for a couple of hours and then they ran out of money after the Polish couple first yelled at them in Russian (not so helpful) and then cleared them out of currency by changing $500! (I think we were paying the price of the yelling). We managed to borrow some money from Claire and went for a magnificnet Laghman (a noodle dish) Yummm.. Had a felt making demonstration in the afternoon. It was a kind of collective where they taught ... read more

Kyrgyzstan , located in Central Asia, is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. Founded in 1878 as the Russian fortress of Pishpek, between 1926 and 1991 it was known as Frunze after the Bolshevik military leader Mikhail Frunze, who was born in Bishkek, which brings the story around to me. One summer day, roughly two weeks ago, I arrived in Bishkek. In my quest for culture, one gentle-natured man felt my yearning. Donned in a culpak, traditional hat, he picked up his oz-komuz (mouth harp) and played. His doyng-a-doyng-a-doyng music collided with my smile and when he completed his song, he exchanged his oz-komuz for a chopo choor (clay wind instrument) and began to play. Hadn’t he been looking for an opportunity to ... read more

Tijdens de zomermaanden kri... read more

Friday 30 May - Shimkent to Risqulov, 83 km Breakfast a bit disorganized as the hotel staff, as usual, were quite overwhelmed by 100 cyclists arriving all at once. I managed to get an egg plus one to pack for lunch, plus the usual other bits, eventually. A very good day’s cycling, beautiful countryside, hilly and green, lots of people and animals and agriculture, and all the time the mountains in the background - some with snow on. There were flowers all over the verges - lots of pink, lots of hollyhocks white and pink, and some purple flowers. We went through villages with roadside stalls selling apples and wallnuts. One had apricots; I asked for 6 and received them free! Another had strawberries, small sweet ones like the ones in my garden at Blewitts Cottages, ... read more

KYRGYZSTAN Herewith, blog from Kyrgyzstan and its just the three weeks late. We’re currently enjoying the Monsoon in India! Thanks to those who have sent messages … but please everyone we really enjoy your comments so don’t be shy! Kyrgyzstan is an amazing country; 90% of it is above 1,500m and the Tien Shan mountains, which run into China, form a beautiful backdrop to Bishkek the capital city. Arriving at Bishkek Airport Tashkent Airport had been voted the 2nd worst airport in the world and it did not disappoint. Manas Airport in Bishkek has the accolade of being the voted the worst so it was with trepidation that we boarded the flight from Uzbekistan facing the prospect of yet another scrum at passport control. So there we were with no visa, no guide book, nowhere ... read more
