View coming into Almaty, Kazakhstan
After 3 flights, 2 layovers, and 36 hours we made it here. We were picked up at the airport by the director or the school where Kim is teaching and taken to our apartment. The city is quite big compared to good old Northern Idaho. The traffic will take some getting use to. People drive like a bunch of ants on their way to food. If they have a inch to squeeze into they will and make 3 lanes where it is 2. Haven't decided if I'm going to try to drive here. There are many ways to get around here; bus, subway, taxi and good old walking. After a quick shower and a hour to unwind we went to the school and were given a quick tour. After we meet the directors and some of the other teachers we spent the afternoon setting up the classroom and meet some of her students and their parents. Afterwards we went home and ate a quick sandwich and went to bed and slept for 13 hours!! Yesterday Kim went to her first day of school while I spent the day unpacking and trying to figure out things in the apartment. After she got

home one of her teaching partners who lives in the same building as us and who was here last year took us around the neighborhood and showed us where to shop and gave us a tour of the area. We stopped at a local restaurant and had dinner. They do not speak as much English her as I was hoping so communicating was fun. Kim had bow tie pasta with duck and I had a salad with egg, potato and some kind of meat, and fish and chips. Played it safe! Afterwards Kim and I went to the market and did a quick shop and checked out what all they had. From what i could tell they have all the 'normal' things they just don't mass produce them. Loaf of bread that is fresh baked and you have to slice it yourself! All the meat is in a case and you tell them how much and what kind. Reminds me of the old time meat market. Now if I only knew what was what. Not a lot of prepackaged frozen dinners. This weekend we plan to travel on the subway and get over to the green market and also do

culture shock
I like the apartment. Square toilet? I'd like to know what the designer was thinking. Looking forward to seeing pix of the city. Scary, thrilling, fun. The adventure of a lifetime. At some point, I would expect you to also feel fear and discouragement, too. I am excited to get to watch this unfold.
