Japan was great, Laurie and I really got a great feel for the city and found the people to be so friendly. Not nearly as many people spoke english as we had expected, so a phrase book and suggestions from a good friend who spent a year there(thanks again Marisa!) really helped. Besides almost burning my hand on the hot water dispenser thinking it dispensed Soy Sauce, and then eating god knows what at some resaurants because nobody spoke english and there were no pictures to chose from, we did well not knowing mutch english. Although Laurie got a little better than I at speaking Japanese, we did pretty well and had fun with it. The city is huge...12 million people! I guess that is why everythgin is so small as well...hotel rooms, bathrooms barely big ... read more

Setsubun February in Japan starts out with the celebration of Setsubun. The word literally means “a division of the seasons”. The holiday is based on the lunar calendar and marks the beginning of the “eve of Spring”. Generally, there are two customs on this day. First, people of all ages throw dried soybeans while chanting “oni wa soto, fuki wa uchi!”. Translated roughly, this means “out with the demons, in with good luck!” People partake in this celebration at work and at home. Usually the boss will be the one to wear the read “demon” mask and allow his employees to throw beans at him. This activity is believed to usher out all the demons and bad luck that have accumulated in the house over the winter season. Spring is a season of growth and rebirth ... read more

I can hardly believe how fast time is passing in Japan. Jeremy and I are quickly approaching upon four months here. And our entry about “first impressions” is long overdue. I was shocked at just how incredibly different Japan and Korea are. Although the physical difference between the two is miniscule, the psychological differences are vast. Apparently most of the countries’ frictions are rooted in Japan’s colonization of the Korean Peninsula between 1910 and 1945. Over 50 years later, the differences really show. The most shocking difference was the way foreigners are treated. In Korea we were like a sideshow. Every time I walked through the streets I was whispered about, pointed to, and often photographed. I felt like the abominable snowman or big foot walking through town. In Japan no one notices me. And after ... read more

The last week turned out to be very chaotic. Jeremy left this morning for yet another visa run. Originally, we had planned to visit Hong Kong together. but our week became unexpectedly hectic and in the end he went to Taiwan- alone. I am very jealous that he is getting to travel while I have to attend to my responsibilities. Mostly I am envious that he will be at a hotel with a bed and that Taiwan is warm right now. There is no animosity, but I will proceed to tell the following story which may publicly embarrass him. I get home every night around 10pm. I put down my bag and immediately start cooking us dinner. Last week when I walked through the door, Jeremy was standing at full attention waiting for me and yelled, ... read more

Japan is pretty expensive, so sometimes we have to get creative on date night. Jen had the great idea of making s'mores. We nostalgically remembered their marshmallowy goodness, plus there was a chance we might burn the apartment down roasting our marshmallows and have to move into a nicer place. We got the ingredients and three different kind of beers, as well as a copy of Dr. Strangelove. We played blind taste test until we settled on Sapporo as our favorite beer, then watched the movie as we toasted our marshmallows stuck onto a chopstick over a candle. The apartment did not burn, unlike the time in Memphis I was living with 3 other guys and our satellite went out. We thought some kids that had broken in and stole all our CDs were now trying ... read more

Hello all. We are sequestered in our tiny apartment by driving rain and wind, so as we stared at the walls we thought it might be fun to update our journal and talk about a few things. First, we want to let everyone know we have recovered from Brad and Jennifer breaking up. It was tough at first, but one day at a time. One day at a time. Really, we wanted to write about the apartment itself so wherever we live in the future we will know that no matter how bad it gets, it probably won't be as bad as this POS place. When I first saw it I could not hardly believe it. It was so small! Like an optical illusion. I did not know they made apartments so small. After all we ... read more

Happy New Year! Happy new year everyone! 2005. Now that all my payments are online I don't have to worry about writing "04" on my checks well into March. After a great deal of deliberation, Jen and I wound up at an Irish pub in the heart of Tokyo. It was one of the least Irish Irish pubs I've ever seen, but they made a nice effort. All the deliberation came about because our last train home was leaving at 11:42 PM and the next one wasn't until 5:30 AM, so we could either stay out all night or go home and celebrate quietly. Even though I am 30 years old (almost 31!) we decided to take the adventurous route. We had a lovely Thai dinner as the snow cascaded and danced outside, then did some ... read more

Merry Christmas and happy holidays! We hope everyone has a wonderful day! Jen had to work on Christmas day! Can you believe it? But we had a very special first Christmas together anyway. We watched the OC Christmukah episode as well as Christmas Vacation (jelly of the month? it's the gift that keeps giving the whole year!). We still have It's a Wonderful Life waiting in the wings. No Christmas Story this year (you'll shoot your eye out!) but we saw it 5 or 6 times last year on TNT so that's OK. We exchanged some great gifts and had a wonderful Mexican dinner (feliz navidad!) We couldn't fit a single present underneath our little Charlie Brown-esque Christmas tree, but we loved it all the same. We have you all in our thoughts and wish Santa ... read more

(Jen writing) Well, the weather in Tokyo is finally starting to get pretty cold. I was really enjoying the unusually warm winter that came as a result of so many typhoons this year. Jeremy and I decided to bare the cold and explore in Shinjuko and Sabuya. These are two of the trendiest spots in Tokyo. The city is currently lit up in preparation for Christmas and New Year's Day. Christmas is celebrated completely differently here. It's celebration style is a unique mix between New Year's Eve (to Americans) and Valentine's Day. There are a lot of heart light decorations and "Christmas" lingerie on display in the large department stores. On a side note, they celebrate New Years exactly the way we celebrate Christmas with our families. While Tokyo doesn't come even close to Manhattan around ... read more

........So, big news from the States. My best friend Lisa is newly engaged and newly pregnant! Congrats to Lisa and Anthony! For those who don't know Leese, I met her when I started at USF. We were in the same grad program and worked right next door to one another. We bonded over the insanely delicious cafeteria food that USF serves and have been best buds ever since. She is already calling me "Uncle Jeremy," but I have proclaimed myself as unofficial godfather so I can go around doing my bad Brando impression. I can see Jen cringing now. So, yay Lisa and Anthony. Wish we could be there with you! But, to segue, we are in Japan. Wait, cancel the segue for a moment. It is also our one year anniversary today! One wonderful year ... read more
