Arriving in Japan is a bit like returning home having forgotten how to speak and not only become illiterate but completely dyslexic too. Relatively few people speak English, most menus are in japanese - even the prices, outside large cities most ATMs dont take take foreign cards and tourists are a bit of an oddity, most signs are of no use to us and we cant read the maps anyway ( which incidentally have no North is up convention either ). Still, we quite like the place and are getting along just fine. Our first task was to buy some more clothes as our swimshorts and T-shirts did not quite cut it in the northern hemisphere. Besides that, we wandered round a few bits of the surprisingly low-rise city, saw a couple of temples, ordered random ... read more

We had heard that Odaiba was a very fun place to visit with lots of things to do, and so one day we decided to venture out and see for ourselves what this area had to offer us. The first place we decided to go see was "Tokyo Big Sight," which from reading my Japan travel books sounded like a large outdoor art exhibit with many oversized pop art sculptures...we have included the 'Big Saw' in our pictures. However, once there, we were disappointed to see that "Tokyo Big Sight" was just a cool name for a convention center here in Tokyo....nothing too exciting about it...except for the architecture of the building which Larry greatly admired. So, after visiting "Tokyo Big Sight" we decided to make our way over to "Palette Town," an area that we ... read more

The subway/train system here is one of the largest in the world. Rush hour is horrendous in Tokyo. The trains are packed to the brim where you literally cannot move a muscle, cause you are squished amongst other commuters. Also there are staff that are on the platform making sure everyone is pushed onto the trains and no one is half in and half out (if that makes sense). When you are on the train 75% of the commuters are either sleeping (even standing up) or texting on their cells. Your cell has to be turned off when on the train and you cannot talk on it. If you do, be prepared to get some dirty looks. Most people take their train rides seriously, as believe it or not that is their only down and/or quiet ... read more

Last monday I went to the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. Mitaka is in the western part of Tokyo, and the museum is located in Inokashira Park, a nice park with water, trees, benches, and things. Studio Ghibli is one of the most famous animation studios in the world, perhaps only second to Disney (maybe Pixar too, but Disney just bought them, so I guess that makes this redundant). Pictures weren't allowed inside the museum, but I took a few outside, and on the roof area. I also took some pictures of food, and other miscellany.... read more

Habituellement le salaire minimum ici ... read more

Tokyo - Written Saturday evening, after 7pm Japan time, en route to Bangkok We’re back in the air, Japan behind us and Bangkok, Thailand in our immediate future. The six hour flight barely registers as an annoyance with our memory fresh with the thirteen hour trip from Chicago to Tokyo. We opted to pay about eighty dollars extra for the extra five inches of space that United adds to “economy plus” seating (that’s economy plus Roger’s knees, which we elected not to leave in Japan). We will prepare another entry collecting our various general impressions of Japan and the people we encountered. Here please find a sampling of our four nights and five days in Tokyo. March 7 After another delightful ride on the bullet train we found ourselves at Tokyo Station, one of the city’s ... read more

Part 2 - Entourage for a Day 4th March 2006. Super Aguri Press Conference & Media Activity 10:30 - 1:30 - Preparation & Media Time I turned up to the Hollywood Plaza in Roppongi at 10:30am to a corridor of 7 elevators serviced by 7 men in black suits, ear pieces and security tags. Feeling a bit "play school - which window to choose" I advanced confidently to the nearest elevator and requested to be escorted to Level 12. Upon arrival, I was shocked by what I saw - my colleagues had also transformed into head-set, walkie-talkie bearing uber-important backstage support crew. The floor was a buzz; media in one room, team officials in the second and support staff (us) in the third. The day's agenda had been broken down by the minute, per key ... read more
