I don't really know how often I should update this thing, because I'm sure how much people want their inboxes filled with my trivial findings and what not. But after a couple of days at my internship, I figured I should write something. Through a series of unfortunate events (ha) I ended up interning at Akasaka Hikawa Jinja in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo. Jinja is Japanese for Temple, so I go to work and put on Shinto robes and sit in a temple. It's weird to get off the train in a huge party district of Tokyo, pass "Gentelmen's Clubs" and cheap bars on the street, but then turn left and walk up a hill to a quiet, somewhat secluded temple. I'm still not exactly sure what my job title is, but I pretty much ... read more

Hi everybody, This next blog features an array of pictures from many different occassions, although one thing remains the same...the location. As you all can see, we frequent "The Hub" quite often - for birthday parties, going-away parties, and just to go out and have a good time. It's a convenient little place, located in the basement of the nearby Oriental Hotel, and with Melanie's 10%-off Disney discount, we can't think of a better place to go sometimes. The first couple of pictures are of us along with Summer, a fellow Ariel, and her boyfriend Jason, who was visiting for a week back in April. Of course we had to take him to "The Hub" and show him what we do here in Tokyo! Then, later that week, we were back to have a going-away party ... read more

Last night I went out for a few drinks with another English, James, who turned up in my dorm. Decided to revisit Rappongi, and chose what turned out to be a quiet (that would be an understatement) night in the so called party district. He told me of his plans to visit the Tsukiji fish market the next day (this market supplies over 90 percent of Tokyo's restaurants), something I have wanted to do since my arrival but not yet managed as it involves a very early start (the main tuna auction kicks off at 5am). I half-heartedly agreed to a 5am start to check it out, as its only a few stops down the line from Minowa, and the first train is just before 5:30. Surprisingly, I did actually wake up at five when he ... read more

Decided to revisit Shibuya today as apparently it is busiest at the weekend. "Busy" is not the word !! It was absolutely packed during the week, when I last visited, and today there was a heaving mass of people in every part of town. Shibuya is Tokyo's fashion district and there are certainly some weird and wonderful dress senses going on in Tokyo !! Kids dressed as everything from goths, punks, 1980's b-boys to hippies and just outright bizarre outfits. The most noticeable difference between here and the UK though, is the fact that there doesn't appear to be any animosity between these groups leading completely different lifestyles, and with completely differing ideas of what they obviously think looks cool. I doubt you could find quite such a mixture of people all hanging around in the ... read more

Big day... Great day!! This morning we headed off to Harajuku to check out the freaky girls. We went to Machida, then caught a transfer into Shinjuku (the busiest station in Japan - every workday 3 million people pass through it!). We discovered that I had been an idiot and put a cleaning tape into the Video camera, and had not brought any spares with us, so we had to find an electornics store and buy some replacements. So find them we did, we also found a zoom lens for our new digital SLR camera - usually it retails for around $800 AUS - Kristy bought it for 15000yen (about $165 AUS) - bargain! I sooooo love Japan! So we went to Starbucks, then caught a transfer over to Harajuku. To be honest... we were all ... read more

Seems silly to travel from the Sushi capital of the world (Vancouver) to Tokyo just for sushi! Anyway, met my brother nick in Tokyo and we had a blast! Nick took me on a tour of the clubbing scene and we went ALL night long. I remember looking at my watch as I walked into the last club of the night, it was 7:30am!! When I walked out I wanted my sunglasses because it was t henext day and people were on their way to work! The Japanese clearly understand theconcept of nightlife! ... read more

Went out to Roppongi last night. Roppongi by night is a 'must do' if you ever find yourself in Tokyo. Went with another English from the hostel and basically got really pissed. We bumped into an American who had just arrived and was looking for somewhere to stay the night, so we took him with us. We never found anywhere for him to stay in the end, so he is possibly still staggering round Roppongi, half-cut and homeless !! The last train back to the hostel is around 12, so we had to end the night there. Unfortunate, but it was that or stay out drinking until 5.30 when the Metro resumes service. It's tricky to make it back to the station without being lured into more bars and plied with drinks by the dodgy looking ... read more
