Great afternoon with the second biggest hospital for cancer in Tokyo. A few facts for the interested - 1st "hospice" in Japan started in 1981, today they have 6,847 palliative care beds in Japan (most are centred in hospital units and very few community teams). Little/no rehab as we would recognise it and 80.8% of people die in hospital (63% would like to die at home) and 12.4% die at home. Almost no nursing homes and care system is led by having health insurance. Really friendly and informative team and we met the palliative care unit team who look after 22 PC beds in the hospital (all terminal care), the palliative care team who work across the 800 bedded hospital (1 medic and 1 CNS and 3 others), the discharge team and had 4 presentations and a tour of the hospital. Really productive and useful afternoon with a lots of helpful background to SPC in the Japan. We had a long commute so missed lunch so now off to get supper (Sushi!!!) One last great innovation was that they play music across the district (whole neighbourhood) on loudspeakers at 5pm to remind everyone to down tools and go home - shall we start this in DH??? Have a great day and talk tomorrow! Wayne
