Well up at 6.30 am in our Nikko Kansai Airport room to quickly dress and walk back across to the airport. We checked in to Cathay Pacific to fly to Hong Kong. They were able to check our bags through to Tel Aviv! There was nothing in the lounge we could eat so we found a bakery with croissants and coffee.
Then back to the lounge waiting and waiting for the plane to be called for boarding. Eventually we were called. The staff were very upset that we couldn’t eat any of the delicious food on offer in business class because it was all meat and shellfish. (Of course we had not been able to request kosher meals because this flight was suddenly booked less than 24 hours earlier.) However, they did find us some salad and fruit and some crackers and cheese and best of all Haagen Dazs ice cream!
We arrived at Hong Kong airport and walked for miles to the El Al check in. According to my app we walked over 2.5 kms (that boosted my step count for the day!).
We checked in and all was fine. We got through security and went to
the lounge and found kosher food - some sandwiches and waited for our flight.
Our flight was called and we boarded the plane. The captain announced that they were finalising the paper work and we would take off within half an hour. We then got a further announcement that there was a technical fault with the plane and the doors had been opened to let the ground staff on.
So I started watching “The Incredibles” - the original film. The crew started serving drinks and nibbles (always a bad sign). After a further hour they brought the meal menu round; a worst sign. Dinner was served and by this time I was stuck in to “The Jersey Boys”. Wow did I love that music. Then the bad news - the plane was not going to take off and we would be put up for the night and further arrangements would be made.
Business class was disembarked first. There were a small number of seats in premium economy available on Cathay Pacific but the flight was leaving at midnight and it was already after 10:00 pm. So we decided against that as we would have to rush to get our baggage from the carousel and recheck in and then rush to the plane and no kosher meals on the plane for 12-hours. The other option was a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt, change to a plane to Istanbul and then on to Tel Aviv. No thanks!
So we opted to check into the hotel and try for the Hong Kong flight tomorrow. We had to go to the carousel and collect our bags and walk across the airport to the hotel. Whilst we were waiting for our bags we discovered that we weren’t the only ones who had been ejected from the Tuesday flight from Beijing and who had missed their connection yesterday due to the weather at Beijing.
We stayed at the Regal Hotel just outside the Hong Kong airport terminal and were given vouchers for breakfast and lunch the next day. This was our 10th hotel during our 21-day holiday to Japan. By this time all we wanted to do was to get home!
