Kurashiki was an odd place - described in one guide as one of the most picturesque places in Japan, this was clearly written by an easily excitable American, who is easily pleased! The town is nice enough, but the picture postcard creation of a willow leafed canal was a little too twee and false for us. The pictures do suggest a pretty location, but it was in reality just a shopping arcade full of shops, high class souvenir shops but souvenir shops all the same. The same can be said for the bizarre reproduction of Tivoli Gardens, with mock buildings and no visitors (we didn't go in either!) I suppose after the splendour of Sunday at Miyajima anything would be a little bit of a come down and it is not as though we didn't ... read more

Last weekend I went to Okayama (prefecture South of Tottori) to watch a bunch of men in fundoshi run around fight to get these sacred sticks. It was raining the whole time and AJET (the organization of JETs who plan things in their prefectures) misunderstood the rules for the section we were going to be at and they told us we couldn't bring umbrellas! Of course, after the festival was over, we were soaked to the core. I managed to hide under some other people's umbrellas, but I was still cold and wet. Definitely helped that I wore my boots and an extra pair of leggings under my jeans. It was still fun though! There were rumors that members of the yakuza (mob) were in the festival and I had a sneaking suspicion that they were ... read more

I decided to mush two days into one in order to maximize enjoyment potential. Here is some more Shikoku beauty combined with Shinto Shrine power. We couldn't let a few rain drops slow us down! There is a custom to draw your fortune on Oshougatsu (New Years.) I pulled mine, and after some hearty laughter from Chi and Shige, I discovered I pulled the bad luck! However, it is very rare that a person shoud draw such a fortune, so in a way, I am actually quite special! All good things must come to an end. This occasion has been nothing short of spectcular! My heart is heavy to leave this place and say goodbye to my wonderful friends and excellent hosts. Until next time - Arigato Gozaimas tou Matane!! A... read more

After a delicious sushi extravaganza and a good night's rest, we had our eyes on the distant ocean. Fortunately, modern technology provides society with a special program called 'the surf report.' With an understanding of the wave energy around us, we could take our time and listen to some tunes while enjoying some tea before a really special traditional occurence. MOCHI!! Mochi is a tradiitional Japanese food made from rice - pounded into submission until it resembles a dough like substance. nice and sticky, and hard to handle for these amateur mochi making fingers. the photos are enticing, and the taste was proper. Check out Chiyori's wonderful family! Next stop, Shikoku... ... read more

For the past five years of my life I've spent a lot of time on buses, trains, planes and cars. I think I've come of the opinion that in terms of being a passenger trains are by far the best. On trains I can sit and stare at the scenery, eat whatever I please, sleep in peace and comfort when i want to and not get sick. Cars, buses and trains are by far best for scenery - and as anyone knows who has been on a plane with me before, I spend mot of the time sleeping anyways. Cars can get crammed and boring - constantly surrounded by the same people. Granted buses and traisn can also be a pain in the neck if you have no seat for hours on end but in a ... read more

It's getting noticably cooler these days. Although this is a sizable relief from the infernal heat of summer, I have to admit Im a little concerned about spending winter here ... The good news is today I biked over to the nearest department store and bought some great new gloves !! They are stylish - as clothing generally tends to be over here - and should be warm as well.. As I was biking I was thinking that the colours of autumn are really orange and dark greens. I guess its persimmon season, the colour of the fruit on the trees lends itself to autumn. Off to find a warmer jacket !! ... read more

July 5 This morning, we slept in until close to 9 when the owner came to our door trying to get us out of the building. I have yet to meat a Japanese person who will be direct with you. Seigo was the closest I’ve come to seeing someone be direct, and I believe that is because he is just from a younger generation. I wanted to see Kurashika, which I hadn’t seen yet, and Max was headed back east so we took the same train. We talked for a bit, exchanged contact info, and we both told each other to look the other up if we were ever in their neck of the woods. When I first met Max, I actually found him a bit annoying, but we actually became really quick friends. It’s a ... read more

July 4 Max wanted to tag along sightseeing with me for a day, but didn’t want to go to Kurashika since he had been there a few years back. Instead, we traveled to Takahashi with intentions to spend the night. When we arrived in Takahashi (which actually translates to tall bridge), we walked into the travel’s info stand that was part of the train station. Apparently, the youth hostel, which was marked in my travel book, didn’t actually exist. The guy at the desk even called the number my book listed although it just turned out to be a regular, overpriced hotel. The cheapest we could have stayed there would about been around $60, and neither of us really wanted to fork over that much cash. We just decided to finish sightseeing in takahashi, take the ... read more

July 3 Today I’m okayama. Tomorrow, I’m traveling to Takahashi before Kurashika. Beyond that, there is not change in my schedule. So I opted out of taking the bullet train this morning because of how expensive it was. About twice as expensive as taking the local express train, which takes about 3-4 times as long. So I was on the train this morning for about 3+ hours when it really shouldn’t have taken nearly that long. O well. Also, the express train was running about an hour late. This is the first time I’ve seen any train in japan be more than 1 min late. According to my guide book, in Okayama, there is a third best public garden in all of japan. The Korakuen. After exploring the gardens, I decided to buy a ice cream ... read more
