My third time in Japan and I loved it! Tokyo was great, as always, but this time I got to visit Niigata. It's definitely less touristy and more authentic Japan, which you notice when you walk around the city or try to find a restaurant on Tripadvisor (and you can't). There's a modern part of the city, old part, a small aquarium, river Shinano, beaches on the Sea of Japan - what more do you need! And I had the freshest sushi with all sorts of fish, even flying fish, which I never saw in Tokyo. Also, they say they grow one of the best types of rice in the country - which means excellent mochi ... mmm mochi!... read more

Leaving the Hakuba valley was with trepidation and a tinge of sadness. Mainly for the anticipated historical snowfall that was to curtail the activity over the next few days of Oshoogatsu, New Years celebrations Making full use of the free local shuttles in the area from Happo village, I headed out to get the gear hire from Iwatake. Iwatake translates as ‘place of hideously loud and tasteless music’, piped through the speakers attracting a mixed crowd of Japanese and foreigner boarders and skiers. On the upside, the terrin of cross country routes through trees and undulating hills fit the bill nicely. I ditched the plan of staying on familiar trails there to go on to Tsugaike’s Maeyama cross country paths, farther east up the valley and about 30 minutes along heavily snowed roads A short 5 ... read more

Travelling in Japan is a precise art. If you are late by 1 minute you miss your ride. THAT CAN BE UNHEALTHY. We awoke at 630AM to leave to go to Sado Island. We had to take a series of 8 separate rides to get to our destination. Subway, Bullet train , Bullet Train, Taxi, Jet Boat, Bus, Bus, Taxi We hopped on the subway to start our trip. 6 subway stops later we are onto our next leg from the JR station (Bullet Train) We actually have to take 2 of these trains. Before we embarked we bought 2 Bento Boxes (lunch boxes) which consists of many different snacks. A little of each flavor. Once on the train we settled in to our next destination, Tokyo. 3 hours later we arrived and promptly switched trains ... read more

On 3 June the all-day tour bus organized by the lady in Ryotsu picked me up from the hotel just after 8am, so which was the earliest start ever. A big bus so no issue to throw my bag under as it was dropping me off at the end of Ryotsu where I would stay the night. It seemed to travel all the way over to Ryotsu picking up people at various hotels and then we headed to the Toki no mori koen – which is a place dedicated to the breeding of the toki, the Japanese pink crested ibis. This is virtually one of the symbols of Sado as a result. The last one died in the wild in the 1970’s I think so they rely on the captive breeding program. It is obviously unique ... read more

But backtracking to the beginning (Niigata). I got back there from Nagano via 2 shinkansen – Nagano to Takasaki where the Nagano line crosses with that to Niigata (the Joetsu line) then from Takasaki to Niigata – all this takes only 2 hrs or so – I only had a 7 min. wait there. In Niigata stayed at another Dormy Inn – I had stayed at one in Akita and thought it pretty good for around the $55 mark. However this was likely a recon job and was not as sparkly and new as the other one. It did however have a 10thfloor hot tub bath with a view (if you stood up – and it wasn’t night). It was quite nice – spoke to in the change room an English speaking guy from Kurgystan (sp.?) ... read more

Giappone: per la seconda volta un viaggio sciistico, un viaggio di passione, la passione per il viaggio. Giappone: perchè? in tanti me l' hanno chiesto. Qualche foto può forse ... read more

So to get to my next destination of Niigata it involved a ridiculous amount of transport and a journey that would turn out to take 3 trains and about 6 hours to complete. Over the course of this journey I had the realisation that it was the start of Golden Week (a major Japanese public holiday) and that the world and his wife would be travelling. This was especially true when getting onto the unreserved car of the shinkansen which was standing room only. Learning from this and not wanting to spend my 3rd train journey stood up for the next 2 hours I decided to go and reserve a seat which unfortunately meant that I would have to wait 2 hours for a train. So I ended up having an unscheduled stop over in Omiya, ... read more

Snowboarding. This means a lot of different things to different people. Reactions vary, from 'snow, what's that?' to 'so, you want to strap yourself to a bit of plastic and throw yourself down a mountain WHY?' or 'fully sick mate! Last year in Whistler I.....' To me it meant that I could finally throw off the mantle of depression and Japan-loathing brought on by being cold ALL THE TIME and enjoy a piece of the winter I was unable to escape. When snow is a novelty it's all 'ooh...snow...wow...pretty...little flakes...la la la...snow faries....winter wonderland.....' bla bla bla, but once the novelty is gone it's more along the lines of 'damn car window has iced up AGAIN!...slippery roads, stairs, pathways...cold hallways at school...getting sick...'etc. A firend called me up and asked me if I was interested in ... read more

Japan! The land of the rising sun, samurai warriors, stealthy ninjas, sushi, high tech gadgets, sumo wrestlers, cherry blossom (although you get that in other countries too) , heated toilet seats, geisha girls, hot springs, sake, love and pod/capsule hotels to name just a few things associated with this prosperous Asian country. I couldn’t wait to get out there and experience all of these things for myself, except for the cherry blossom - wrong season! We left Beijing for Tokyo on the 23rd July, stopping over briefly in Shanghai, which we found amusing since our travels had begun there. I felt a slight longing for my old life in Shanghai then, but that quickly passed when we boarded our flight bound for Tokyo. We arrived in the evening and had our first taster of Japan’s rail ... read more

So I went to the Fuji Rock Festival. 'Twas wicked. I saw a bunch of bands play... Danced with a load of random Japanese people, basically didn't sleep the whole time... Man, I didn't know there were so many Japanese hippies. And these guys party pretty damn hard. The bands I saw were (In no particular order whatsoever): Kings of Leon Muse The Cure Lily Allen Jarvis Cocker Kemuri The Beastie Boys Iggy & The Stooges Kaiser Chiefs Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group ...And some random Japanese bands whose names I cannot type. ...And that's not to mention the all-night DJs. I met the guys who were working on bringing "Afro Punk" to Japan--It's a documentary about black punk-rockers. They were pretty cool... One of them did an interview on MTV while we were there. We hung ... read more
