This week was the start of the Sendai Pageant of Starlight; which is a beautiful light display in the trees along Jozenji-dori. Lucky for me it is a quick walk to get to all the action. I was going out for dinner the other night when I found all the trees shinning with bright lights. It is absolutely gorgeous and a must see for anybody in the area. It's a small affair but there area some venders set up with food. My co and I walked down it and then headed for some Italian food. Sendai has a bunch of Italian places. It was ridiculously cold here last night. Though the walk was cold it was a lot of fun to see all the lights. A very nice way o end the day. I have been ... read more

No traveling this weekend. My co and I both decided that we needed to just vegg out and get a lot of sleep. Funny thing is that, in an effort to save some money I had to drop over $1000 on a new laptop this weekend. I have had my thinkpad for 4 and a half years and I love it. It got me through college and didn't have any major problems....until this week. Recently my thinkpad has started freezing up for no reason. Then, when I try to turn it back on, it wouldn't do anything. Then when it does come on, it will freeze up after 5 minutes. So my dad and I had some great Skype marathons and we have decided that the computer isn't savable and that I should just get a ... read more

Well, today was the oh so awesome medical checkup. Rumi, my manager made sure to let me know, "don't be late da yo" and co and I found ourselves up @ 7am and walking to meet at Fuji Saki @ 8am this morning. The medical facility was right across the street from the arcade and on the 4th floor of an office building. Rumi, Kerin, Ryoko, Koji and I all got our lockers and changed into the shirt they gave us and went to take our urine sample. I made sure i got a bottle of water so I would actually have to go; which worked like a charm. After the sample we all sat around the waiting room, men and women, and waited for our chest x-rays. Yes, it is 100% normal to get a ... read more

I decided that today was going to be my Sendai Tourist Day, or one of them anyway. I have to say that I really enjoyed myself for the morning and most of the afternoon. I did most of the city on foot and the hike up to Sendai-jo was worth it. Even if there really isn't a castle there to walk around in. The day started out beautiful, in the low 70's I think and only just recently became cloudy and overcast. I left the apartment around 10:15 this morning and set out with my trusty guide (LP for those who care) and headed up to Sendai-jo by foot. I figured that it would be a better way for me to see the city I live in and also, I didn't really want to sit in ... read more

I have finally gotten around to getting a blog together so that all my friends and family back home can check in and see that, yes i am still alive and that i'm having a great time in Sendai. Here is a quick introduction: I am a recent college graduate that is still thinking about teaching as a goal in the future. I am teaching with Amity/AEON in Sendai, Miyagi-ken, Japan and am loving it! I was looking around travelblog and saw that there weren't a lot of people traveling up to the north of Honshu so i wanted to help change that and get some information out there for those travelers who want to get off the beaten path of Japan and explore "Real Japan". Now to start. The first day, we, all 6 of ... read more

Our flight arrived in Tokyo in the early morning, around 7am. Since it was still early, we decided to head straight to Sendai which is 2 hours from Tokyo Station by JR Tohoku Shinkansen Line. From Sendai, we visited Masushima, which is known as one of the three most beautiful sites in Japan. We also visited the other most beautiful site in Hiroshima later on. JNTO website has good information on Miyagi Regon. ... read more

I made the trip to Sendai to the Immigration Bureau to get my re-entry permit- a little stamp that alows me to leave and re-enter the country with my visa so I'm not stranded in South Korea next week. Little did I know, my trip coincided with the large Tanabata festival which Sendai in particular, is famous for. Tanabata means "Seven Evenings" and is a Japanese star festival right before Obon holiday week (next week). It celebrates the meeting of Orihime and Hikoboshi. The Milky Way symbolizes a river made from stars that crosses the sky, separated these two lovers, and they were allowed to meet only once a year. One of the rituals of the festival sees Japanese people write wishes or poetry on small pieces of paper that are hung on bamboo poles with ... read more

Mayasan This was looking like it would be a weekend of failures. Firstly we had been planning to go to Fuji as a large team ..... But we could not find crampons to fit onto Balazs' titanic shoes. Secondly I decided to go to Fuji by train alone and meet Gary at Fuji station ...... But the last train from Tokyo to Fuji was fully booked by drunk people. Finally I called Philippe who said he would be around the following morning at 7-00am with a surprise adventure for me. OK this sounded promising! As morning came it was apparent that we had rain and gravity was high making it difficult for us to get out of bed. Eventually we got it together to leave Sendai at about 10-00am after a brief stop in Lawsons. In ... read more
