hehe... good one. :) Well, yesterday we went on a crazy adventure to Kyoto in search of Geisha. This involved catching a local train to Shin-Yokahama, then catching a bullet train (or shinkansen) down to Kyoto. The shinkansen travels at around 300km per hour, when one travels through a station without stopping, the ground shakes, and a 15 carriage train passes in like 10 seconds... very cool. So we got off in Kyoto, then caught the Japenese subway to Shijo, where our hotel was (very nice, very central, very cool). Unfortunately, we had gotten used to the warm weather in Tokyo, and hadn't thought to bring much warm gear, and it was rainy, and quite chilly in Kyoto, so that was... interesting. Yesterday afternoon we went and checked out the Golden Pavillon, this temple covered in ... read more

Written on Friday Hey! Lots to say. I'm trying to adapt to the lifestyle here, but it is a lot different and a lot harder than I expected. Trite, yeah, but damn - this is going take some time before I'm used to this. After a scant 4 hours of sleep, my sister kindly drove me to SFO and managed to get through the U.S. end of the passport deally without any real difficulty. You know that big suitcase, though, the one we thought was less than 50 lbs for sure? Yeah, 'twas pushing 80. Turns out there isn't a charge, though, for overstepping the 50 lbs limit as long as it is under 75. So after a minor reshuffle, all was good. The plane ride was long but marked by brief periods of acute and ... read more

So just about a year ago from this time I received my acceptance onto the JET program. I remember shaking as I unfolded the paper, then went screaming through my sorority house that I was indeed moving to Japan in July. Then I called my parents. Before saying congratulations, my dad said "Oh we are coming to visit you during Cherry Blossom (aka Hanami) Season!!!" Hard to believe that a year has gone by since that time, and even harder to think that my parents were on my stomping ground. I was very excited for them to see "my" country, indulge in the tasty cuisine, see the old/new Japan, and get to see what I do everyday in this crazy country. Their adventure began in Tokyo on a tour. From there they went to various places ... read more

What does one discover when arriving off the plane? Heated toilet seat covers, vending machines in residential streets and face mask donning locals - we must be in Japan! Kyoto is the must see city in Japan, second only to Tokyo in tourism. Although lots of Kyoto does involve neon and the like, it certainly has more than its fair share of "real Japan" - yes I know I just uttered the heinous phrase but Kyoto really does have raked pebble gardens, temples galore and the tripping step of a latter day geisha in pursuit of a taxi. With more than 2000 temples and shrines, a trio of palaces, dozens of gardens and museums, not to mention a total of 17 Unesco World Heritage sites, months or even years could be spent exploring Kyoto and turning ... read more

Saturday was yet another example of how crazy the Japanese are, and how much more crazy the rest of the world is. My archi class and prof traipsed through Kyoto station top to bottom east to west in an effort to rip its architectural value to shreds. It is possibly the most stupidly designed building in Japan!!!!!!!! This is where you can't use the term: "not just a pretty face". It's only a pretty face. or at least a moderately pretty one. Then we zenned out at Daitokuji (spelling wa yokuarimasen) temple complex. Zenning out consists of taking notes about tea rooms, snapping a million research photographs, AND relaxing on the stoep of one of the most famous gardens in Japan, being served tea and cake, and just generally being slow, relaxed and self indulgent! Then, ... read more

We then met up with our friend, Francie, who lives in Osaka. We met her at Nijo Castle, which is a beautiful fortress, and best known for its inornate interiors and nightingale floors. The floors of Nijo Castle were actually pretty cool because they were designed to make bird-like squeaking sounds when walked upon, a warning of possible intruders. Finally we decided to call it quits with the history part of our trip and go shopping with Francie. We went to a very popular area of downtown Kyoto for shopping and got lost in its maze of stores. Here we bought a couple of souvenirs and Melanie bought a cute jacket. After shopping, we headed to a nice restaurant/lounge called "Ki-Chi-Ri"where we had dinner, drinks and delicious desserts. Then we went back to our hotel (yeah, ... read more

Who would have thought that I would pay money (voluntarily) to consume foamy green stuff and a pink thing that looks like an overgrown moth ball? And who would have thought that I might actually like it! Yep, for those in the know, I finally tried Mocha. Mocha is the foamy green tea that is used in tea ceremonies, and the mothball thingy is a delicious cake that accompanies it. The tea is bitter and has foam sorta like a cappucino... only green and without dairy products involved. It's sakura time in Japan. Think anticapation, excitement, special weather forecasts, people keeping a constant eye on the 'terebi' and the paper, and a general air of festivity. Tents are being errected, parties planned, sake purchased, and festive markets held. So what's all this about, you ask??? And ... read more

Hey everyone, Sorry for the delay in travelblogs, but this is gonna be a long one...our 3-day trip to Kyoto, which is the former capital of Japan. Since Kyoto is quite a ways from Tokyo, we took the "Shinkansen" (or "Bullet Train") to get there. The Shinkansen has this nickname because of its very fast speed - about 200 km/hr!! By Shinkansen, the trip is only about 2 and a half hours, but VERY expensive. It ended up costing us over 50,000 JPY (or over $500.00) for both of us to get roundtrip tickets. Once we arrived in Kyoto, we decided to find our ryokan first and check-in all of our luggage. A "ryokan" is a Japanese-style hotel with absolutely nothing western about it...no beds (or any furniture for that matter), tatami mats on the floor, ... read more

So, on the 3rd of April I turned a quarter of a century! It was a beautiful day in Kyoto that day. For my birthday Andy had booked a night at a japanese ryokan - which is a traditional japanese inn. It was a both a really nice and different experience. There is no permanent bed as such. There is a main room and a small sitting room. The main room has TV and for most of the day just a table and cushions. When it is dinner time they bring you about 4 courses up to your room and when you are finished, they pack up the table and make up your futon on the floor. At first it is pretty strange getting so much service, but quite nice. The rest of the day we ... read more
