... read more

Kamakura Asia » Japan » Kamakura By chiujMay 11th 2007JiaoruMore than an hr train ride from tokyo brought us to the old town Kamakura. After visiting Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (ie. one of the most significant shrine), MX n I wanted to visit other temple/shrine nearby. Somehow we seemed to have followed a wrong route n ended going on a housing estate tour. The unsual thing observed about Kamkura was that ladies like to carry black umbrella to shield them from the sun. It was like as common as Japanese men wearing blacksuits.... read more

I decided to venture out for a day trip by myself to Kamakura. I hadn't gone on the JR line or Shinkansen by myself before so I was feeling all the emotions, excitment, fear of ending up in the wrong town in the wrong direction from where I wanted to be but I must say I was mainly excited. I had heard great things about Kamakura and it was a place on the top of my list to do. So of I went on my little adventure, had to get up at 5:20am, that was hard in itself. Got the bus to Shizuoka and then the Shinkansen to Odawara and then changed to the first JR line to Ofuna and then changed again to Kamakura, yep 1 Shinkansen and 2 trains but to my surprise ... read more

After 2 days in the Mitsui conference and 2 days of exploration in Tokyo (refer to my previous posts), Mingxian (my applied chem junior who had done a 6-month internship in Japan last year) decided to visit the family of his former supervisor on the 5th day. The family invited Mingxian and me for lunch in their home in Yokohama. The family was very friendly to us. The father of Mingxian's supervisor is a famous chemist, and the mother is a kind and friendly housewife. Mingxian's supervisor also has a brother, who worked as an engineer in JVC. (He even showed us the latest video projector from JVC which he installed in the cellar. The quality of the screened videos is as good as that in the cinemas.) After a very satisfying lunch, Mingxian and ... read more

A good day trip from Tokyo is Kamakura. Saw all the surfey dudes sitting on their boards. No wind, only rain. It rained the entire day and our friend Yuji braved the elements to take us around some shrines and temples. He brushed off the idea of using his mother's brolly which was in the car because it wasn't cool!! was the most interesting Asako, another japanese friend treated us to an exquisite italian meal and brought us to a stunning ryokan which was a luxury night's stay in a beautiful setting. Thanks guys for a great day!! ... read more

Eve, Rusty and I planned a trip to Kamakura, about an hour outside of Tokyo to see the giant Buddha statue and visit the beach. Kamakura was once the capital of Japan so it has many shrines and temples, but having seen one too many temples in recent months, we opted to make the trip for Daibutsu- the giant bronze Buddha statue. The Great Buddha Shrine was a 10 minute walk from the local train station, on top of a hill facing out towards the sea. The Buddha is over 10m high and was cast in the 13th century. The Buddha was once housed in a wooden building, but it was destroyed along with the town of Kamkura in 15th century by a massive tidal wave, leaving the Buddha standing alone. The Buddha statue was impressive, ... read more

While all you aussies were enjoying your easter weekend, gorging on chocolate, not working on friday and monday, holidaying at the beach and being rained out at oakbank or the clare races Marissa and I caught the shinkansen to a touristy town called Kamakura a couple of hours away for a Saturday trip. The sun was shining, the birds were singing the octopus was hot and the beach was cold. All in all what a lovely (and long) day!! Also a few random photos from driving around on Sunday ... read more
