Sapporo – Lake Shikotsu 53 miles Between an 8-hour karaoke binge and England’s next World Cup match, I’d had very little time to rest. Normally, a 4am kick off would have been deemed an unheard of feat, yet I was still running on an excess of alcohol fumes and raring for England’s next humiliation to the Uruguayan’s. This match inevitably resulted in England being dumped out of the World Cup; the impossible dream living up to its predictable reputation. And with Japan shortly following England out of the back door, football fever soon dampened down across the board. England’s loss however would have a sobering effect upon me. I’d been in Hokkaidō for close to 2 months now, and as much as it was a an awe-inspiring and grandiose prefecture, I was eager to experience the ... read more

Mashike - Sapporo 74 miles When I awoke I was able to add a new tick to the list of places slept upon my journey thus far: Hostel - ✓ Baseball Pitch - ✓ Park Bench - ✓ The House of Pubes - ✓ Hotel - ✓ Tsunami Evacuation Point - ✓ Refugee Shelter - ✓ Wilderness - ✓ Train Station- ✓ Traditional Japanese Home - ✓ Bus Stop - ✓ Congratulating myself I shoved a couple of bananas into my gob before making haste into the overcast mountains of Shokanbetsudake. Not ultimately before I might add, sweeping and tidying up the premises. The Japanese etiquette almost flowing naturally through me now, apart from the fact that I’d just roughed it for the night it in a bus stop like a quintessential hobo that is. The ... read more

Today I finally gone and done the deed. Have my haircut. The sound of hair being cut off (dried) is massively daunting. And the "shooop shooop" sound is also very daunting. Seeing your own hair going to waist length to less than shoulder length is also very strange. From waist length it went to just over shoulder length. Just enough length for them to sculpt out the right haircut. An hour later, I am about 2 stones lighter. Not kidding. Even the hair dresser was saying "takusan no ke". Which means - lots of hair. I now have a fringe and a half a bob. It's quite nice. I am no longer cool - I am now (apparently) cute. I had ramen for lunch at Ramen Kingdom. It was so so good. Then I went shopping. ... read more

So today after breakfast I left Sounkyo and head back to Sapporo via Asahigawa. And my iPhone wire has decided to go for a Walkie. I need to go back to get another one. The journey from Sounkyo back go Asahigawa is about 2 hours on bus, then another 1.5 hours on train from Asahigawa back to Sapporo. There was a bit of a wait between Asahigawa and Sapporo. I left Sounkyo at 1000 and got to Sapporo at 1630. I had dinner at Sapporo Bier Garten. It's also a beer museum but it was late already when I get there so I didn't go in. I went when I was younger (7 years ago) and I loved it. If I have time on my way back I might go again. The food was good, and ... read more

So good to be back in Sapporo. This is one of my favourite cities. If was an interesting journey after we left Helsinki. I had a massive migraine halfway through the flight and stupid me completely forgotten about them (how? I am not sure) and basically threw up everything that was ingested whilst I was on the plane. I tried the old fashion way - sleep it off but every time I woke up it just seemed worse. I tried drinking more water as dell, but By the time I thought I couldn't deal with it the plane was taxiing already and with the pressure outside the cabin changing, it seemed to help my head a little. The rush started when we get to Nagoya. Little did I know it was just the beginning of the ... read more
