I've rented a phone for the duration of our stay. Incoming calls are free, but outgoing are 4 yen / second. So, I will be making short calls sparingly! ;) To call me dial: 81 - 8034955378. So, feel free to call. :) Just check your international rates & the time difference! Ja ne, Rae... read more

Wee! I made it to Japan. Crazily, I left Seattle at 1:30 pm on Friday, traveled for a straight 10 hours and landed at Narita at 3:30 pm on Saturday. Not once during our travels did it get dark outside. The plane ride was awesome! It's the first time I've had real food on a plane since 1999! We got two hot meals plus snacks and tons of drinks. Lots of movie choices (I could be as ADD as I wanted!) so I watched parts of Indy 4, Narnia 2, Leatherheads, Miss Pettigrew, and the Jet Li/Jackie Chan flick. Good times. We could also track our progress, so I watched that a lot! The lady next to me was great...a Japanese native who has lived in Alaska for years. We chatted like crazy ( to the ... read more

Training…..and Trains! The events from 29th March-5th April OK…. I arrived in Japan on March 29th, had a day to myself to meet the other gaikokujin (outside country people), chill-out and explore, and then on March 30th (a Sunday mind you) we started training. It basically consisted of group work, note-taking, presentations, many anecdotes about living and working in Japan, and went from 9am to 6pm for 6 days. By the end, we were all totally shattered, and of course, that’s when we had to give our demonstration evaluation lessons. We were graded on our attitude, helpfulness, genkiness (energy and enthusiasm) and tested on our knowledge of policy etc. I missed out on a master trainee ranking by 1 point! But still walked away with an upper superior trainee ranking (I keep wanting to say mother ... read more

Hello! Sorry for being lazy and not writing... We have been training all week from 9am to 6pm and then samling the delights of Narita in the evenings. Training finished yesterday, and after going over policy, teaching techniques, lesson planning, demonstration lessons, Japanese etiquette, expectations for and by schools and company...... I can safely say i'm knackered. There has been an overload of information, and now all 43 of us in this training group are moving out to our respective placements, and feeling nervous as anything about meeting the Boards of Education and teaching staff. If I tried to list all of the faux pas possible, and some that I have made (without knowing if i have or not), i would probably miss my train. Last night I thought the hotel was moving, and conceded that ... read more

I have arrived! Wow. First impressions: calm, friendly, clean, busy, foreign, fun, exciting, new, surreal, and fantastic! I arrived yesterday morning and training started this morning so I had a free day to explore with some of the new (to be) teachers I have met. There are several going to my area which is reassuring, and all of the staff seem friendly and helpful (which they assured me is only a facade meant to lull us into a false sense of security). I'm staying at a lovely hotel in Narita, and have made a few friends from all over the globe. My roommate is Jamaican, and is very friendly. We're similar in some ways (both dating men with similar names and we have names which can be shortened into similar sounding nicknames; Nikky and Riki), but ... read more

We were returning to California on Japan Airlines and our connection was in Japan. Because of the scheduling, we found ourselves with a 10 hour layover in Narita. Rather than spending all that time at the airport with nothing to do, we decided to see if we could pick up a one day tour of the area. We checked at the information desk and found no short tours available. Speaking only English, we were a little nervous about leaving the airport without a guide but decided to give it a try. We hit the ATM and got some Yen, managed to get tickets and proceeded to the train platform. There were a few signs that had enough English for us to get on the right train, we proceeded to board and find a seat as ... read more

Hello everybody. Finally here!!! Japanese keyboards are the hardest things in the world to work, so you will have to bear with me while I try to type properly. I only have 7 minutes left before I run out of internet too, so it's gonna get a bit messy. I could type in Japanese if you wanted to... Anyways, that probably didn' work. We had a good flight, when we got here there was a bit of a mixup because everybody had told us there would be somebody waiting for us holding a sign with our name on it, and when we did actually arrive there was nobody. It:s (You need to hold down the shift key to get an apostrophe and I just don:t want to anymore) pretty daunting when you:re in the middle of ... read more
