We keep the blackout blinds open overnight, but it doesn’t seem to make a lot of difference. Jetlag’s still got a firm hold and we miss breakfast yet again. The signs on the lift say not to use it if there’s a fire … or an earthquake. This is good advice I’m sure, but where are the stairs, or are we perhaps supposed to just jump over our room's balcony? I‘m suddenly glad we’re only on the first floor, although it’s still a fair drop even from there. There’s a palm tree a couple of metres out from the railing, so maybe we could leap out on to that and slide down to the ground if we really had to. I’m not finding that option all that appealing, so I head out in search of the ... read more

It seems the block out blinds in our hotel room are quite effective; we thought it was about 6am when we stirred from our slumbers, but a quick check of our devices suggests we were out by a bit, like say about six hours. I suppose that’s jet lag for you. So so much for breakfast; it looks like it’s straight on to lunch. It feels slightly strange to be completely surrounded by Aussies again after three months when they‘ve been a relative rarity. We head out for a wander down onto the wide grey sand of Seminyak Beach. The surf’s pounding in and signs on the flags recommend against swimming. I think there might be more motorbikes here than people … on the roads that is, not on the beach; the sand on the beach ... read more

12 September Today we start our tortuously long journey home with an eleven hour overnight flight to Singapore, which we’re looking forward to like a hole in the head. Then it’s on to Bali where we’re planning to spend a few days chilling before finally heading back to reality. We’re flying with Singapore Airlines’ low cost carrier Scoot for the first time. The fare was about half that for the real thing, and it seems you get what you pay for - I think I can squeeze into my seat, but I’m going to be spending most of the flight with my legs dangling out into the aisle - I hope I don’t get run over by a food trolley. And perhaps unsurprisingly you have to pay for everything, including charging your phone? Really? The lights ... read more

June was all over US and Bahamas...The first two third of July was back in Shelly Beach, South Africa, the place we call our long-term home! No blog this time about these nearly three weeks. It was all about playing a lot of golf, drinking some superb wines, and yes, few more dives with my sharks! By the 19th July, and this for the next 4 weeks, I'm back to my lovely wife working hard in Bali! Imagine, pretty soon it's already a year we arrived here! What a year it has been so far! Tanya is seriously busy with the re-branding of her hotel. She leaves home each morning at 8am and she is back most day just on time for the dinner that I love to cook just before 7pm! Glad for us, this ... read more

Had our eggs and mangosteens for breakfast and finished packing before meeting our driver Alit who I met on the path leading to the entry car park. I left Daisy and our luggage at the side car park as it was close to our villa and would save us carrying it down. I hopped into Alit's car and we drove around to the side car park, packed our luggage in and set off on our day tour. First stop was the Ceking Rice Terraces, Tegallalang. We did one of the big swings together which was fun and then set off on a trek through the rice Terraces which was great. You did have to be careful as parts were a bit muddy and slippery, but it was a great little hike. We stopped for a drink ... read more

Today was Daisy's birthday. Because bad weather was forecast we decided to organise an indoor activity and a few friends had suggested cooking classes, so that's what we did. It was a nice tour, we were picked up at 7.50am and we initially had a group of 6 in our pickup group. A couple of guys from Philippines and a couple from Slovenia, all really nice. We were taken to a rice field first and told how the rice was harvested, then to a local market which was very interesting and we even managed to get some mangosteens, a fruit we never knew about but is very popular with people who do know about. We bought a kilo which was 10 of them for $3, so cheap. We got to the cooking house at 9.30am and ... read more

Woke up late and decided to eat our eggs and corn flakes. By then it was 11am so we decided to just hang around until it was time to visit our friends, Rosie and Gary who moved to Ballu a few years ago. We ordered a Grab car at noon and it artived fairly quickly but then I noticed he was going in the opposite direction to where we wanted to go, so I got him to stop and it took a while to sort out the correct destination. Rosie told us to go to Warung Ting Ting and I found it on Google Maps. For some reason the Grab app was taking the driver to a different Warung Ting Ting, so there must be two in the Ubud area. So it ended up taking an ... read more

Nice leisurely start to the day. Breakfast in the resort restaurant at 8.50am and we chatted with Jenny and Garry until about 11.30am and then Justin and Lynn . We left our room at 12.45pm and ordered a Grab car which took about 30 minutes getting to us because of traffic. Plan was to look around Monkey Forest, but it was pouring down with rain and when we went to buy tickets, the tickey lady said “no monkes today” because of the rain. We decided we would leave it for another time, but then daisy spied some nice dresses they were selling for a bargain price and she ended up buying one, so at the least the trip wasn’t completely wasted. We then decided to walk up the long road towards Ubud Palace, where the we ... read more

Had a lighter breakfast at the resort restaurant because it is Day 3 of wedding celebration with a farewell lunch at another residence designed by Hadiprana. By the time we had finished breakfast and chatted to people about the previous day’s wedding , it was time to get ready for the transfers to the lunch venue. Today was pouring down with rain and we all agreed how lucky we were that the wedding day was yesterday and the rain had held off at the right time. We were amongst the first to arrive and the grounds were again magnificent. Chef Dean Nor was again in charge of the farewell lunch and this time we feasted on suckling pig with spicy blood sausage, fantastic chicken legs, corn and salads. We had a most enjoyable time chatting with ... read more

Day of the wedding. We decided to have the resort breakfast. Not a buffet style but you ordered what you want from a menu for a set price. It was actually a much better quality breakfast than the usual buffet style. As the ceremony wasn't until 4pm, so I decided to go for a walk. Daisy and Debbie unsuccessfully tried to book a massage, so they agreed to accompany me on a walk. Decided to walk to Puri Agung Peliatan temple as Google said it was about 35 minutes. It took us much longer of course but the walk was very interesting. We passed a few factories that made statues out of various materials and when we turned a corner off the main road we were in a residential street, all with amazing entrances and we ... read more
