The Most Beautiful Beach in Kuta
This would also be the beach where we were Stan and I got our intro to surfing. This was our predetermined destination at which to hook up with our surfer son Tanner and his partner Annie, who were arriving from Canada to spend some time in the Indonesian sun. Being the amazing parents we are, we took it upon ourselves to do some research last year in our travels, looking specifically for the best surfing waves in a laid back setting, and voila! Here we are again in beautiful Kuta Lombok, with amazing beaches and surf that extend for miles in a still undeveloped landscape which also offers stunning higher elevation rides into a countryside rich with lush green rice paddies. It was a tough job, but we took it on, and delightfully, one year later, here we are again to share it with Tanner and Annie.
This was the place I cut my teeth learning to get comfortable on an electric motorbike, and it felt perfect to get on again and just ride. So we stayed for a week, biking almost everyday, enjoying the lovely pool and grounds at the awesome Yuli's Homestay, while Tanner surfed almost daily. I also managed to translate one of my favorite songs to share into Indonesian, and shared it with
Special Moments with My Son
I wasn't really as terrified as I looked - I had trust in my teacher! And it turned out to be a blast, which we did over and over again. a class of students who come twice a week to Yuli's to study English. They rewarded me with a collection of drawings they were making in their class. Delightful!
But the highlight of our time here, without a doubt, was being introduced to surfing by Tanner. This was definitely not on the bucket list, as I am well known for my control freak tendencies. However, after one go at it Tanner showed me how I could, in fact, control the direction I was heading as I repeatedly rode my wave in to shore and managed to determine where I ended up. Stan as well took a few lessons from Tanner, and got in a few rides. Tanner was obviously pretty happy to be able to intoduce us to his sport and share his passion with us, and we were very pleased to have been able to have that experience.
Of course, although I would love to let you keep holding on to that image of each of us riding a massive Hawaii 5-O style wave, I have to confess we never did get to standing up on the board. We kept to a lower gravity base, for rather
obvious reasons - wanting to stay in one piece, unbroken and unscathed - for the duration of the trip. But we still learned a lot of the basic skills and practicalities of surfing, and most importantly were able to feel the power of the wave beneath you propelling you onward, enough to appreciate what fun it is. We look forward to more such fun - maybe trying out some boggy boards - when we get to Nusa Lembongan, Bali, next month.
But our next stop is Gilli Air, en route to Gilli Trawangan again, where we will take in more dives and perhaps learn a few more water sports.
