After getting up late - didn't get back till 3am and heading down to see if there was anything of breakfast left - not really expecting there to be, but found an urn, tea bags, sugar and cups - perfect! Trying to ask for some milk - 10 minutes later being offered a large glass of warm milk - not really what I wanted but nice all the same. No Samuel or Raymond to taxi me round today so I got a motorbike rickshaw come taxi into the centre of medan - had a nice chat with the driver on the way with me trying out my Indonesian on him! A lot of people ride motorbikes here, cant tell the makes though as they all look about 30 yrs old and hanging on to their last legs! Medan is Indonesia's 3rd largest city but not really containing much of a city - just having one main high-street. So after spending a couple of hrs walking up and down it I stopped off for some lunch and got some snacks for later. Medan isn't really a place to stop and visit - more just to pass through to somewhere else, the city is very dirty with a kind of dust constantly in the air - covering everything. Litter everywhere and little in the way of pavements - and where they are they are falling apart with huge gaping holes about 6ft down into the gutter - so watching your step is important! After stopping off for a drink I caught a motorbike rickshaw back to my hotel - I paid him prior to the journey, he got the address wrong ( I gave him a card from the hotel ) and was then trying to charge me more - I flatly refused - he took me to the right hotel and I relaxed for the evening after packing.
