Me and Rob spent last night sleeping in a single bed as my mattress felt like a bag of rocks. Rob's seemed to have no springs and he just sunk into the middle of it leaving me to lay on a sort of mattress hill at the edge. It was mighty hot too with just a piddly fan in the room that you couldn't angle. Other highlights include it being ridiculously small with just enough room for a bed, the toilet had no seat and no flush, no sink and the whole room smelt of sick, even the towel!
We couldn't wait to get outta there so as soon as we woke up we had a shower and went down for breakfast. The breakfast here is a bit pricey. I had jam and toast, tea and some fruit (that tasted a little suspicious so I left most of it) and it came to 30,000. Rob played the game of "find the chicken" with his chicken sarnie. Went on net for a couple of hours as when we walked in our GH last night Mohammed said he would drop the price of the private car tickets to Bukit Lawang for us
as another couple also wanted to go, so we paid 50,000 and we leave at midday.
Probably not be online for a few days as internet is meant to be pretty non-existent in Bukit Lawang.
Right off to see some orangutans.........
Update: OK things didn't run as smoothly as they should of! Went back to GH at 12 and asked about car but Mohammed wasn't anywhere to be seen and this guy just looked at us blankly then rushed off to call someone. Came back and said 'car goes at 1' like that'd been the plan all along. Went back at 1 and Mohammed had reappeared, he said the car was being fixed and we'd leave at 1.30pm. Then at 1:30 he told us we would have to wait for the other couples laundry to be ready so it would be 2pm hahah at this point I just started bantering with him about it, it's pointless getting argumentative out here, you just have to make your point with a smile on your face. At 2.15pm we finally set off. Car was cool and spacious and we had a chat with the other couple who were from France.
When we arrived in Bukit Lawang Oman from our guesthouse came to meet us as the place we were staying was a 20 or so minute walk through the village (no cars are able to get past a certain point). So we walked through the cute little village along the river. At times I struggled with my bad as some of the path wasn't finished and so I had to virtually climb at one point. As we were walking it started to thunder and it was so loud and the lightening was really close. We were putting a bit of a spurt on as we really didn't want to get caught in heavy rain with all our bags. Luckily we just and I mean just managed to get into the restaurant as the heavens opened and is absolutely chucked it down. Fadil the owner checked us in, he seemed really welcoming, in fact everyone here does.
GH (The Garden Inn) is lovely, garden is beautifully kept and the bar/restaurant is nice. We had some food and a free cuppa while we waited for the rain to slow. There are a couple of cute cats here and the black and white one (Michael Jackson) jumped straight on my knee and snuggled in 😊
When we looked over to where we'd be staying we noticed that Jon and Jean were sat on a balcony near ours! When rain calmed down a bit we grabbed our bags and went to our room. Room was nice, it's a squat toilet but that's not too bad if it's just the 2 of you using it and it's a cold shower which you're glad of when you've spent the say sweltering (not so glad when you've just got up like). Double bed is comfy and well it's 10 times nicer than 'sick room'!
After dumping our stuff we had a chat with Jon and Jean and I showered and hand washed some clothes (really expensive to do laundry here). We spent he evening chatting to Jon and Jean and to Opick, the manager guy. A group of locals inc. a few that worked at the GH were sat playing guitar and singing songs - our fave is the Bukit Lawang song (sang by Oman) to the tune of 'Jingle Bells'. It goes 'Jungle trek, jungle trek, in Bukit Lawang, see the monkeys, see the birds, see orangutan' 😊 Had a laugh with Opick who told us that the tigers in the jungle were tofu eating tigers and talked about the punky monkeys (Thomas Leaf monkey), he also kept repeating 'Welcome to the jungle'.....Leccy was off for most of the night due to the big storm which went on till late but bar had some lighting so we stayed there till bed.
p.s. loving the free nibbles at our GH- they give you free plates of crackers mm mmm
