After a 10 hour taxi ride we arrived in
Bukit Lawang which is the access point to the Orangutang forest. On
arrival a couple of chaps helped us carry our baggage... thankfully
because On The Rocks, unlike Nepal where Everest View Hotel is near
the Indian border, is up a steep climb of nicely laid out steps to a
place that can only be described as paradise in the jungle. The place
is right on the edge of the jungle border and has a collection of 4
bungalows made in the traditional style arranged in a secluded layout
where you can parade around naked, if it takes your fancy. When the
afternoon monsoon rain fell it took my fancy…. During our first
night in the Bungalow we were attacked by a butterfly that had a wing
span the size of my hands..we both hit the deck thinking a vampire
bat had come in for a feed…Once we realised what it was a rather
large Gecko (approx 300mm long) came out and attacked the butterfly
and we both gained our composure.
We had travelled up in the cab with a
Swedish couple who ironically were heading to the same place and by
early new years eve the 2 Swedes and Lisa suffered from
Orangutang
They are so cute a stomach
illness that saw everyone but me all but me spend the remainder of
New Years Eve and New Years Day either throwing up or sleeping… I
on the other hand spent my time between administering the appropriate
drugs to Lisa and the Swedes who had no medicine at all with them...
and bandaging cuts sustained by an Ozi girls foot and a fire works
burns sustained by the On The Rocks female cook… So the story goes
the Ozi girl lost her balance and cut her foot at the same time she
was handed a fire works canon shooter..as she stumbled the canon went
off and hit the cook in the foot giving a very nasty burn…yes
alcohol was involved... So I earned the title of Jungle Doctor…
Day 3 Lisa had enough strength to head
down to the local village where I went for a swim in the river with
about 50 million locals up from Medan enjoying the last day of their
holidays… Great fun was had with about 49 million people watching
me do my thing.
Day 4 with Lisa now feeling much better
we decided on a morning trek to find some Orangutangs. The morning
time was chosen because it is normally cooler, so off we trekked up
steep jungle paths pushing
Our Jungle Hut
We share this with two fairly large lizards and a large range of insects but otherwise it is as good as it gets really our way through the dense undergrowth
(editors note the was written by princes Darren) entangled with
rattan vine and leach infested paths… after what seemed like 14
days we saw our first Orangutang… Wow these things are huge and the
female had a little cute but stupid baby who was having a great
time.. reminded us of the Ugandan Gorilla babies… Unlike Gorillas
these are more loners and when a large wild male approached our guide
was quick to move us out of harms way.
We are now just hanging around our
jungle hut passing the time drinking passionfruit juice and eating
rambutan. There are worse ways to spend time waiting for flight
connections. Oh yes we forgot to mention the huts here have two very
cute puppies, Bob and Marley who provide the entertainment when the
monkeys are not in the camp to watch. There is no television and the
internet is a very big hike from here so we are getting some much
needed rest.

So were you naked when the vampire butterfly floated by looking for dangly bits to latch onto ... tee hee!
