We, and especially Leo, had been seriously bitten by the diving bug, so we wanted to do still some more dives during this trip. Thus, we arranged for a week long diving holiday at a resort on Bunaken Island, next to Sulawesi in Indonesia. It was rather far, three and a half hours by plane from Singapore, and still half an hour by boat to get from the city of Manado to Bunaken. We were met by Sven and Esther, a German-Indonesian couple who runs the resort, and got to know a French family with two teenage boys, who later ended up joining us on most of our dives. The first impression regarding the resort was not great: our concrete bungalow was hot as ever, had no a/c, and the toilet was not flushable, but you ... read more

Hi everybody, a few weeks has past since my last entry. Sorry about that but the internet conection hasn't been that good as I hoped. But here we go with the latest storries. Kuala Lumpur A city under construction - the headder I've kept in my mind since I saw this city fist. You can not locate a city center right now, betweeen the new well polished skycrapers you can find the old dirty "slums". Not really slums, but not that much better. Beside the Petronas towers it has also nothing special to offer. Riding the metro could be really anoying! Three different lines, opperated by three different companys so you have to buy a new ticket every time you have change headding. But at least they can improve :) I would like to come back ... read more

We have now finished 11 nights staying in Bunaken. Travelling has been a bit of a nightmare because we found out really late that all the locals go travelling 1 week before and 1 week after the end of ramadan which causes everything to be booked out and prices to increase to silly amounts. We decided to just sit it out in Bunaken marine national park which has world renowned diving. We managed to get a room with Matt and Linda which decreased the price a lot cause we had a double bed matress on the floor. We were there 11 nights and had parties on 4 of those nights. Matt and Linda did their Open Water PADI while Connie and I did 6 dives (one of which was a night dive). The diving in Bunaken ... read more

We were back late for diving today because we left late. Some guest including Toby and Harriet had been out in then boat before breakfast to see dolphins. Harriet isn't orally keen on getting out of bed before sunrise, but this morning was different. She and Toby had to be on the boat at 6.00am to sail to the other side of the island. They saw loads of dolphins that jumped and swam around the boat, but weren't keen on people swimming near them. They were late back making the dive late and lunch even later. We have realised that this is pretty normal for Indonesia. Although times are given for things, they are so laid back, things just happen when they happen. Today was our last day diving and we headed over to the mainland ... read more

Fiona's ear started to play up yesterday and she didn't want to risk damaging it, so she decided to snorkel rather than dive today. Mike and Michelle from Manchester got the staff to put us on one boat together. We had normally only had one boat going put but loads of people were diving today. Being together meant that Michelle and Fiona could sunbathe and chat whilst the others went diving. The snorkelling was great and Fiona saw more turtles than the divers! The second dive, she had just gone out over the reef when she saw bubbles and Toby and Harriet popped up below her. They got a shock when they looked up and saw her waving at them. We all had a fantastic massage in the afternoon. We were brought 2 special drinks made ... read more

Today was pretty similar to other days so we decided to change things up and walk a different route. We headed to BunakenVillage and walked along the beach. A local guy stopped to chat. He was originally from Sheffield, but packed up and moved to Manado for the lifestyle. He was very friendly and seemed to be enjoying life. It doesnt seem to matter when or where we walk, every time we bump into one of the dive guides, Demsy. Today he was on the beach chatting with mates/ family / friends. People obviously come to Bunaken for a holiday, whether this a diving one or not. It surprises me though how many want everything to be the same as at home. For example, at the resort you can make tea and coffee whenever you like. ... read more

The dives today were both fun. The first one had a strong current but instead of trying to slow down we just let it take us. It was like flying. Then we spotted a black tip shark. It was quite a big one probably 150-170 cm. On the second dive we swam with a turtle for a while and also saw a sting ray. It rained in the afternoon and as it was Sunday we decided to have a lazy one.Harriet tried to persuade Toby to pay her huge amounts to eat a chilli. She then touched her eye and had to have an eyebath. Hint- dont put chili in your eye. It hurts! When we go on our walks we see the same things each day as there is only one road. We often have ... read more

We have got into a regular lifestyle here now. We wake and go for breakfast, then make 2 dives. After diving it's time for lunch and a rest followed by a snorkel along the reef, a walk and a game of cards. Then dinner and bed. Today we didn't manage the game of cards because we spent so long snorkelling. It was fantastic though - there is so much to see on the reef. I almost like it more than diving because it is so quiet. There is no air noise and in the current you can float along making no effort. New people are turning up everyday. Today we had a new diver called Mike who lives in Altrincham. I remember Altrincham very well as we used to go ice skating there when I was ... read more

We woke at 7.15am ready for our 7.30am breakfast. Harriet pointed out that it is just like being on camp except you have to wake yourself not have a teacher do it for you. Today's dives were lucky point and turtle city. The turtles at turtle city were huge. One small one swam right by Fiona. Toby was having a few issues with signals under water. Again Fiona and Harriet messed up their breathing laughing! He thinks he is learning too many languages - Indonesian, Spanish- in preparation for Argentina, and diving. Harriet has decided to give him pop quizzes for the rest of the day. We decided to take an easy afternoon reading, writing and sleeping, but at 4pm it was time for the daily walk. We have settled into a bit of a rhythm ... read more
