Ketut had organised for us to get to Gili Meno via fast boat from Padang Bai, twenty minutes south of Candi Dasa. We thought it best to pack light and took our hand luggage only to Meno (leaving our suitcases at Aquaria). We were booked on Semaya One’s morning boat and thought we were being collected from Aquaria at 8:30am. However there was a knock at the door at 7am – a taxi driver saying we had to check in at Semaya One by 8am. We literally inhaled our breakfast (so delicious at Aquaria!) and jumped in the car. Needless to say, having to wait two and a half hours in the sun left us far less than impressed at Semaya One. Then to be ferried from island to island, stopping last at Meno at 2:30pm ... read more

Had an early start and got a slightly rocky boat over to Lombok. It was quite quick and when I got to the other end I got a shuttle bus to Sengiggi. Once there I waited in the cafe for a couple of hours for Katy to arrive (my friend from my project in Fiji). We spent the afternoon planning our time in Lombok and Bali and booking lots of stuff - not much fun but very productive! Then we went out for dinner - I had been craving pasta so ordered Bolognese but it was super spicy- I should of guessed being in Indonesia! The next morning we went to Sengiggi beach just to take a look before getting out bus to Kuta Lombok. We checked into our hostel- the woman wasn't exactly welcoming! Then ... read more

Ah the Gilis. Once isolated desert islands and now a tourist hot spot like no other. They were first occupied a hundred years ago by Suluwasi fisherman and the tourists started arriving in the 1980's, Jane's sister Catherine among them. There are three Gilis ('small islands' in the Sasak language) hanging off the North West coast of Lombok: Gili T. ('Trawangan') is the party island culturally linked to Kuta in South Bali. It was for a different generation. Gili Air is the closest to Lombok and is quickly following Gili T. with resorts around all its shore. Lastly, little Gili Meno sits between the other two. It is less than 2km long and is the least developed of the three. We choose it for that reason and also because it seemed to offer the best snorkelling ... read more

When I entered the room I almost didn't recognise her! I had never seen Jane with so much foundation and false eye lashes. And she still had the hairspray and hair piece to go. We had been invited by our homestay host, Bram to join a local wedding procession. We were told to wear a sarong. I wore one we had bought the previous day and Bram's wife, Huriani, lent Jane one of hers. Bram and his friend Eddy, took us down to the groom's house on the bikes. The groom was sitting in casual clothes surrounded by friends. A number had been hitting the rice wine pretty hard. I made a donation to the groom's father of 50,000INR as directed by Bram. Jane was soon whisked away to the make up room. It the mean ... read more

Day one - Picked up sharp at 08.30 and driven up to the harbour to get my refund and start the trip. I was told that a cabin had become free and taken down to the boat to have a look and to make my decision. The boat, not being that big with 2 cabins close to the toilet or an upper deck with 20 thin mattresses with no room in-between - I chose the cabin! Being driven back to the cafe and meeting point ( there would be 2 boats leaving together each carrying 20 passengers) we all sat and had a drink while they prepared the crews and the boats. We headed off at 12.30, all the others seeming really nice - people from New Zealand, Canada, France, Switzerland as well as others and ... read more

Not setting my alarm and enjoying a lay in i had in my mind to book an extra night at the hotel - i didn't see as being a problem as there didn't seem to be too many other people staying. How wrong i was - the hotel being fully booked for tonight! So, spending the next hour packing and finding a suitable hotel online ( and with the help of the friendly manager) i found one and only being 4km away - and with hot shower - perfect! Also being a 5 minute walk away from Senggigi I was wishing I had stayed here the whole time and only being £12 a night. After unpacking and sorting some laundry I headed off to find a tour agency to book the 4day/3 night boat trip to ... read more

Deciding to leave Bali today to travel east to an island called Lombok - after a bit of haggling I got a price I was happy with for a return journey to and from the island. Setting my alarm for 05.30 for another early start and being driven to Padang bai ( about 2hrs from Seminyak on the east coast) and waiting for what seemed like ages for a boat - we were finally on our way! Arriving an hour later ( the public boat taking 5hrs!) and being offered a motorbike ride with my heavy bags to the hotel for 60,000 rupiah - £3 I didn't think was too bad. Arrived at the hotel to be greeted by really friendly staff, so after I unpacked my bags I headed out to find the local shops ... read more

After having a good nights sleep but not being able to face a cold shower, I had my breakfast and got picked up along with 7 others to be taken to the harbour. Waiting with a couple from Belgium and a couple from Canada for the public boat to be full and we would be on our way. Sharing the long wooden boat with about 50 locals, boxes of beers, baskets of vegetables and fruits - 20 minutes later we had arrived at Gili Air. There are no roads on the island, so no traffic, and only one path that winds its way round - which can be walked in about 1hr. If transport is needed its by bicycle or horse and cart. The beaches are very clean with mostly white sand and clear turquoise waters ... read more

After a week in Bali, I headed to Lombok. Lombok is a beautiful island and a bit less developed tourist-wise than Bali. I took the local ferry early in the morning from Padang Bai, and it took three and a half hours to get to Lembar. The ferry ride provides wonderful views of Bali and the waters separating the two islands. The day I crossed, the weather was perfect—warm air with a cool breeze and sunshine throughout the crossing. In Lombok, I mostly relaxed and unwound, not doing too many things. I stayed in Senggigi, a beach town just north of the capital, Mataram, during my stint in Lombok. Though the town didn’t offer a lot, I greatly enjoyed staying there as a jumping off point to the rest of the sights within the island. In ... read more

On our final day in Australia we set off from our hotel near Cairns airport at 4am as our 2 hour flight to Brisbane left at 5.45, this was the start of a very long day; three flights in a row. Just before going through security Freya realised she had left her iPad in the hire car, causing the first of three sprints that Stuart would do that day. Luckily after racing back to the car drop off point, Stuart was able to recover the iPad and return it to a very relieved Freya. During a toilet stop at Brisbane airport Stuart got separated from Rebecca, Abby and Freya which resulted in very nearly missing the next flight - only a last minute dash to get on the plane stopped us from nearly missing the flight. ... read more
