Halfway through a journey originally heading over to Gili Trawangan on the 16th of May I suddenly found myself being being whisked off to Rinjani to complete a 2.5day trek which would finish on the 19th and leave me back in the Gili's at the end of it. Perfect. I had been hoping to climb this Volcanoe during my time in Indonesia and this worked out perfectly. Just to set the scene; It's a monster and still very active. It's current height at it's highest point is over 3700m. It has a crater lake at it's summit which itself is a couple of kilometres accross and is surround by the steep walls of the rim which in most places are around 600m high (lake to rim). The trek in, which started at 1000m, already on the ... read more

The trip to Gili involved a 17 minute flight and terrible harassment from the locals in Lombok... Steph, Sally and I were glad to get over to Gili (by ferry) where everyone is way more laid back... The islands -- there are three; Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air -- are quiet during the day and a divers haven. At night Trawangan would turn into a party beach... each night a different nightclub along the beach would have a "party" which would involve loud music and dancing often until the sun came up. The accommodation on Gili is varied, but since the girls had convinced me to "rough it" a bit, we stayed in little huts for about $10 a night. For the first two nights we shared a little hut -- it was ... read more

The Gili islands. Wow, what a place. 3 beautiful, beautiful islands bordered by the whitest beaches and coral rimmed reefs. Ryan and I were a bit fed up with Bali in that where we were staying was not particularly nice and the people always trying to sell you stuff was getting annoying. Not to mention that Bali is dead at the moment. So we jumped on the ferry from Padang bay to Lombok and then another ferry from there to Gili Trawangan ( the party island). These islands are tiny, I mean you can walk around any one of them in less than 1 and a half hours. We stayed in a very nice place a block up from the beach for 4 bucks a night which included a fantastic breakfast. The restaurants are awesome. They're ... read more

Until I run the London Marathon. It all started today when I went on my first run since knee surgery back in December. I was laying in my bed with the overhead fan churning away without too much success. I have not really pushed my knee since surgery for a number of reasons including laziness, being constantly on holiday and too busy eating ice creams. It felt awesome. I was so happy that my knee felt good. I took about a 5 km run around the island. By the way, Ryan and I are on the most amazing little island in the middle of nowhere. It's incredible. The run was all along the coast, past white beaches and coconut trees; past farmers herding their cows and having to occasionally dodge the odd goat in the road. ... read more

Anneke ... read more

Fri. 10th. Mar. We caught the 15:30 flight to Sydney, which eventually connected with the Darwin plane, which, after 2 time changes touched down at 11:30 p.m. Thankfully the information desk was still open and fixed us up with a decent hotel, and a shuttle bus into town. We were exhausted. Sat. 11th. Darwin is more compact than we imagined. There is one main street with most of the restaurants, bars etc. on it, and then just quiet side streets. There is a buz about it though, which we like. We got a map and did what little tourist sites there were, and then sat by the pool. This is the piece de resistance. On the roof-top there is a bar, pool, spa and magnificent waterfall. We finished off the night up here, watching the city ... read more

Hi everybody. Sorry no pictures this time. I'll fill them in later. The internet connection here is really slow. Fi and I are staying in a Sports Illustrate Swimsuit edition. Those magazines lead one to believe that these islands are polluted with scantily clad supermodels. This is not entirely true. It's mostly scantily clad chickens and cows. Fi and I just walked around the whole island this morning. It was about 3 km maybe more maybe less. It didn't take long and we weren't exactly rushing. White lagoon beaches all the way around. Hardly anyone is here. Certainly no Americans. Only Germans and Hollandaise (That's people from Hollland right?) We're leaving this island tomorrow and moving on to the next Gili. Spend another two days there and then another two days in the next Gili. Maybe ... read more

Anyway, feeling a bit down in the dumps I decided to do the thing I have grown to really enjoy- Scuba Diving!!! I went to another island in Indonesia called Lombok. It takes 12 hours to get there by bus, ferry and local transport (horse and cart!!) to these little group of islands called Gilli's. I went on the largest island to a place called Manta Dive. There is no motorised vehicles here- hence the use of horse and cart!!!! I did my advanced scuba course and something called a Nitrox course. The advanced involved a Naturalist dive where I had to learn the fish names (not in latin thank god!!) and identify them, a navigation dive where I learnt to use a compass and guided my instructor underwater, a deep dive which took me to ... read more
