Hey there earthlings, hope you're all well? I left you in Bali after the birthday party, from where we embarked upon a little voyage via coach, bemo and boat. It was a little tricky as we had to get into a little boat to get to a bigger one, when weighted with a 20kg backpack on is a challenge I'd rather not face again. Still, we made it onto what I call a mini sailing ship, enough for 12 people plus a very friendly crew. There was a lunch already waiting for us and the top deck was a mock beach, so you could lie out and listen to the waves...so relaxing. The only bizarre scenario amid this tranquility was when a video of 80s karaoke songs was put on for about half an hour, with ... read more

Hello Everyone! Travel has been extensive and internet not redally avaliable all the time. Here is a quick update from Indonesia. After spending some time in the Gili Islands corey and I decided to go back to Bali and head to Nusa Lombongon, a small island south east of Bali. As we pulled into Mataryam, the capital of Lombok, we hooked up with one of our fellow Canadians, and with one minute to departure back to Bali, we changed our ticket to Kuta, Lombok! Best decision ever! Kuta, Lombok is a hidden surf spot that draws hundreds of surfers in the high season; but thankfully for us it was still the low. This place has around 15 surf spots all within a 30min scooter ride! We rolled into town and heded right for the ocean. A ... read more

Surfing Well its still the off season here for surf, which might not be such a bad thing. I spent the last four days on the southern coast of Lombak, where my days consisted of a 6kms scouter ride into a bay called Groupuc followed by a 1.5 kms boat ride to a break called inside. The surf break here was just packed and was definetly not for beginers, but I guess what doesnt kill ya can only make you stronger. I caught a few waves here, but I spent most of the time staying out of the way of other surfers and getting pummeled by the breaks for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Power system here was terrible and totally unpredictable, it would cut off and on somewhere around 15 ... read more

I had heard of these magical islands off the North West coast of Lombok called the Gili Islands. This string of islands boast some of the best diving, snorkling, and hammock recreation around Bali and Lombok. We chartered a shuttle to take us from Lovina, Bali to the Gili islands to put our new PADI certificates to use. Golo and Ingred, our German friends, saw a golden oppertunity and tagged along. Our first day on gili Air was breathtaking. Our bungallo was 20 meters from the beach which boasted a 2km reef 20 meters from the beach. White sand, hammocks and a bar that played Jack Johnson all day, there wasn't anything more we could ask for. For the next few days we snorkled in the morning, watched a movie with lunch and snorkled in the ... read more

One hell of a ride. I don't know how I will top this last adventure. I am now bouncing around the Gilli Islands, which are unreal. Yesterday morning we did a morning dive at Sunset point and saw a 2 meter white tip reef shark just chilling at his reef. We watched as this amazing creature in his element glided through the ocean and circled his reef from about 10 feet away. The shark was curious and came by for a close look at us and then had what seemed like a nap on the ocean floor. We also saw some sea turtles down there. Then That same evening we dropped in for our first night dive, It was a full moon and the visibility down there was awsome. We saw sea snakes, Lionfish, Scorpionfish, ... read more

With a big delay, the bus to denpasar arrived at 22:00. Immidiately got asked ridiculous prices by bemo and taxi drivers. Decided there and then i did not like bali. With the knowledge of having to go home early, due to financial reasons, i choose to head for lombok the next morning, just to get away from it all if you know what i mean. Afetr a very long ferry ride, and 1 hour on the back of a scooter, i spend the night in senggigi, sonya's place. Then went over to gili trawangan (island) for new years. Didn't have a blast, but wasn't really looking for it either. Just had some quiet beers on the beach with a german couple. On the first of january i went back to sonya's place in senggigi, wher i ... read more

It's my last day in Gili Trawangan. My last day in Paradise, Christmas Day. I leave this island for down under in a short time and can't remember the last time i was this passionate about a place. This island. These people. The wonderful relationships i have made in this short time that i have been traveling. It is the most freeing experience i have ever had in the whole of my life. I feel as if i could just float away and disappear on an island in the sea and stay forever. I feel much sorrow having to leave such a beautiful place and beautiful people. People that are full of life and love. That will make you feel at home in their home and in their hearts. They don't have much and they don't ... read more

After Sumatra (I've added photos to my previous entry) we flew to Bali which is another of the Indonesian islands. It was amazing how different this place was compared to Sumatra - loads of tourists and every local you meet tries to sell you something - transport, t-shirts, bracelets, hats, fruit, drinks, mats to lie on the beach, blow-pipes, bow and arrows etc etc. So, as you walk along in Kuta you get shouted at from everyone you meet to buy something. Also, the prices for everything was much higher here than in Sumatra (don't get me wrong its still dirt cheap) but the standard of living seems a bit higher as well which is cool. Anyway, we stayed in Kuta for a couple of days which although it has nice beaches and really good surfing ... read more

Do read yourself a bedtime story, tuck yourself in and doze off to sleep. Do not wake up when a hairy monster touches you in the night because it will surely give you a nasty fright. Do however turn on your trusty head torch, which you hold in your hand, and startled the little fella in the face. Make light of the situation when you realise it is a nice looking incredibly scared baby rat. It will make you feel a lot better. Do not however say hello to it, fall out of your bed get entangled within your mosquito net with the baby rat as you will inevitable meet his bigger brother and wake your neighbours up. I almost didn't want to post this blog. I rather selfishly wanted to hide and to protect Gilli Trawangan's beauty - to save it for a time when I'll be back there again. But unfortunately the secret is already out. Somehow along this well worn tourist trail, all roads lead to Trawangan. The first person we recognized was the guy from the bus to Lovina. Then the Irish girl from Senggigi. After that I ran in to Andrea and Astrid, the German girls I'd met several weeks prior in Malaysia. Even Marcus was there. Weeks ago I dedicated an entire blog to our interaction in Malaysia. But the strangest of all was Ben. We first met in Cambodia 2 years ago! I saw him walk past and knew that I knew him from somewhere. He did ... read more
