For the last leg of my adventure I headed to Lombok, Bali’s sister island and specifically more for the infamous Gili Islands. I don’t think anything can top my adventures to date. It has just been IN-CRE-DI-BLE!!! 😃👍👌 But it ain’t over until the fat lady sings ... and I ain’t singing just yet!!! 😂🤣😆 So I’m on the plane about to land in Lombok and then comes the announcement... “we regret to inform passengers that we are unable to land in Lombok due to military activity. We will return to Bali”. First thoughts... Then someone mentioned it was Labor Day so the military probably had some practice drill to do, but why oh why didn’t they inform the plane before it took off? Oh it’s quite normal, they just do these things! 😳🙄😲 So back ... read more

One down side to the lovely open air bathrooms here in Indonesia are the geckos who share your bathroom. Now I don't mind the little ones that gobble up the pesky mosquitoes but we had a very big one living in the overhanging roof. It had made it's favourite place right above the toilet. Most mornings when we first went into the bathroom there was a fresh load of droppings..... All over the toilet but not in it, just everywhere else! Hence a big clean up on my part every day. Geckos do not have good toilet habits! Off course an open air bathroom has its plus side , when showering after dark, the stars above you are amazing and a cooling evening breeze. In addition to the resident gecko were some huge black and yellow ... read more

A new day, a new place! Thamarind Resort, Gili Gede, Lombok,Indonesia We woke to the sun streaming through the window of our bungalow and the smell of cooking. It was time to go out and discover our new surroundings. The breakfast that was included turned out to be nice, scrambled egg, toast ( that was actually toasted!) Tea and fresh fruit. A good start. After breakfast we swam out with our snorkels and were happy to discover that there was a lot of coral still intact and a drop off teaming with fish. This was exactly what we'd been hoping for. Back on dry land we explored our surroundings, there were three bungalows like ours and the rest were just square bamboo huts with a mattress on the floor. Apart from the lumbung house that we ... read more

"What have I got myself into", those are the first thoughts when the alarm goes off at 2.30am. In half an hour the car will be there for a three hour drive to the bottom of mount Rinjani, a 2.700 meter high volcano. I am not ready for this, but the question is will I ever be? At 3.00am sharp the car arrives which surprisingly enough looks quite comfortable. As I crawl in the back my headphones come out and the best I can hope for is some extra sleep. Unfortunately my thoughts decide not to give me a break of thinking about how though this hike is going to be and the coming two hours feel like forever. When my head decides I am ready for some sleep, the car pulls over and the driver ... read more

Time to move on. As Sharon and Scott have taken off to Australia for a few weeks we decided it was time for us to move on too. We spent a night in Krabi on the mainland Thailand before flying down to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. From there we were due to get the 3.35 pm flight to Lombok, Indonesia arriving just before 7pm. We had a taxi arranged tto meet us to take us to the ferry port for a boat to the island of Gili Gede. ( pronounced ... G'day) However the flight was delayed by first an hour then again for another hour and a half before taking off. Meaning it would be almost 9pm when we landed. On arrival at Lombok airport the front and back doors were opened. We were slap bang ... read more

February 13th: An Amazing Day of Diverse Experiences in Three Parts Every year for the past six years, since we first discovered this island paradise off the coast of Lombok, Indonesia, we make a point of returning. In our extensive travels throughout Asia since 2006, we have visited many beautiful countries and places, but some take a piece of our heart and keep it in safe keeping until we return. Gilli Trawangan is one of those. It was the first island we visited in Indonesia in 2013, and the first time we encountered pony driven carts - the primary mode of transport for everything -as there are no motorized vehicles on the island. It is where we first swam with turtles, then a year later took our Open Water Diving course, and met our very dear ... read more

It was Stan’s birthday yesterday, February 8th. He is seventy one years young. He has just completed a month long 150 hour intensive yoga course, and is about to do another scuba refresher course to prepare for the somewhat challenging dive excursions we are undertaking next week in Komodo Marine Park in Flores, Indonesia. He is seventy one years young. I am very proud of him. I am fortunate to have been able to share his birthdays with him since he was twenty six years old, and excited to continue our lifelong adventures together. His birthday tributes began on February 7th, one day early. We were still in Kuta, Bali, enjoying a sunset dinner overlooking the beach with his sister Annie, who had just completed a forty hour global trek across the planet, to celebrate the ... read more

When I was growing up, I spent every Christmas by the beach on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, where my cousin was a surfing fanatic. Which makes it surprising that the first time I ever got on a surfboard was two years ago in South Africa. For my first time, I actually did alright and I had further attempts in Peru and url=../../Central-America-Caribbean/Nicaragua/Southern-Pacific-Coast/San-Juan-del-Sur/blog-925586.htmlNicaragua a few months later. When you're able to catch a wave and stand up, it's a real thrill and I remembered watching the pros go at it in Nicaragua and thinking how fun and exhilarating it would be to be able to surf at that level. To get to that level however, requires a lot of practice. I have si... read more

A combination of jetlag, all-nighters in Tokyo, bedbugs and sleeping late, saw me end up with a nocturnal body clock in Ubud; more bedbugs and a power cut then combined with my grogginess for a less than ideal morning when it was time to finally leave Ubud. The power cut in the hostel meant that the card machine wasn't working, which meant that I needed to make a mad dash to the ATM in order to get the cash to pay for my stay, before getting picked up by my shuttle. This sort of thing can happen when you're on the road but after two years of it I was just sick of it. Thankfully, the hostel worker was helpful and gave me a ride to the nearest working ATM, which ensured that everything was done ... read more
