GILI ISLANDS There are 3 islands which are just off Lombok, next to Bali. Gili T is the busy party island - Gili Meno is peaceful paradise - Gili Air is the perfect balance of both. These islands are peaceful and beautiful - why even go to Bali? Not many OZ or Kiwi visit, mainly Europeans. Getting There: The easiest way is get a boat from Sanur which includes collection from your Hotel in Bali to Gilies, it takes a couple of hours at a cost of NZ$170 each return. You can hop between islands for NZ$3.50 for a 15 minute boat ride. Attractions: Diving, snorkelling, glass bottom boat, its all about the beautiful clear water and the tropical sea bed. Snorkel hire NZ$4 per day. All islands have a sandy track/road you can walk around ... read more

Good Morning boys and girls. Today we will be talking about Gili Trawangan. Where we left off last time, Nepal, feels like an eternity and a half ago. I actually got quite a lot of feedback from the EBC blog and I hope I can inspire a few of my loyal readers to visit Gili Trawangan, or just Gili for short. After eventually leaving Kathmandu (the flight was delayed for about 4 hours) I changed flights in Delhi, fully aware that my flight hadnt left yet. The airport customs quickly shuffled us through a motza of waiting queues only to leave us in another large customs queue. Now practically all of the people in this queue were trying to catch connecting flights that were also waiting for them, so more than a few arguments started as ... read more

2nd Stop Gili Trawangan (Gili T) May 8th-12th Quick intro to Gili T thanks to Wikipedia " Measuring 3 km long and 2 km wide, it has a population of around 700. Of the Gilis, Trawangan has the most tourist facilities; the pub Tîr na Nôg claims that Trawangan is the smallest island in the world with an Irish pub. On Gili Trawangan (as well as the other two Gilis), there are no motorized vehicles not even real roads, only soft sandy paths. The main means of transportation are bicycles (rented by locals to tourists) and cidomo (a small horsedrawn carriage). For traveling to and from each of the Gilis, locals usually use motorized boats and speedboats. The economy of Gili Trawangan centres on tourism, as the island is too small to support any broad scale agriculture, ... read more

On Wednesday evening, we walked 30 minutes around the island to view the sunset. We were told the sunset was around 5:30-5:45pm and that the sun disappears quickly, so don't be late. Pete and I arrived around 5pm to an area that looked like it could have been an amazing bar/restaurant area that had been abandoned. There were only 4 other people there, so we picked out our spot and enjoyed a bottle of Pineapple Selak wine from Sari Organic in Ubud. More and more people showed up the closer the time to sunset arrived and by the time the sunset occured there were around 100 plus people enjoying the views. We have experienced many amazing sunsets but this was one that I will always remember. The sun sets to the right of Bali Island where ... read more

Just spent 6 lovely relaxing days on the Gilis (islands off Lombok) recharging our batteries after the climb. Not much to update on really, we spent most days sitting on a beanbag reading, drinking banana smoothies and I spent a lot of time playing with the stray kittens - they were so cute and clean (I think). Highlight of the few days was the scuba diving. We did two dives and the last one was the best as we went down to 30 metres, which was really cool, deepest dive we have done, saw lots of colourful fish, turtles, sea snakes and Tom saw a white tipped reef shark but it swam off before I got a chance to see it! A couple of photos attached, nothing too exciting seeing as most of our time was ... read more

With Ubud in our sights we said goodbye to our friends at Bali Agung and took our pimped out ride up the hill. We arrived at Villa Mandi to find ourselves in the middle of a rice field, with an onsite Indian restaurant made of bamboo and our very own cow next door. In the intense heat of the hills we took refuge in a games pub where we thrashed out 3 games of ping pong until the sweat dripped from our hard tanned bodies ..... (Greenep-3 Kelly-0)!! David managed to keep both of his flip flops on for another couple of motorbike rides through the mountains but I did hear a suspicious high pitched squeal coming from somewhere behind me ... maye it was the monkeys?! Our new friend iPong (later known as iPad) kidnapped ... read more

10.3.2012 Felt a bit groggy this morning and Sophie woke up with a sore throat. I was raining so we read and napped all morning. Sophie finished her book 'The Clockwork Angel'. Which she is massively addicted to, there is a seeries so she'l probably have her head in them for the next few weeks. We went for a walk and used the computer. It ended up being a massive skypeing seession. We spoke to Cathy, Spen and Dave and Zoe. By the time we had finished that it was tiime to go the night food market - our new favourite place. This time we had chicken cashew, spring rolls and chicken satay. 11.3.2012 We hired snorkels and fins today. We walked down the beach about 100m and waded in. The water was so clear, the ... read more

8.3.2012 Got the boat over to Lombok, then onto Gili T. (An island off Lombok) As soon as we arrived it started raining - typical. We didn't have anywhere to stay but a few places in mind. We boarded a horse and cart which took us round a few of the homestays until we agreed a price with Warna Homestay. We ended up getting it for around 90 pound for the week for the 2 of us which is really cheap compared with what we have being paying. There's no cars or scooters on the island, the only way of getting around is walking, bike or the horse and cart. As you can imagine it is very chilled out here, no one rushes and everything gets done when its done. It continued to rain for most ... read more
