Hi Guys! This was my second visit to Gili Air, my first being in 2012 and I have to admit I was a little worried it wouldn't live up to my first visit as I had the most amazing time back then. I have to say I wasn't disappointed at all. Is Gili Air a little busier, yes however it is by far ruined and it still has that feel of being a throwback to the old days! Zipp Bar is still there piping out its tuna skewers and bottles of Bintang and the horse and carts are still wheeling up the sand paths at break neck speed!!! The locals are still really friendly and the post sunset vibe is still super chilled. One of the best things to do here, especially on a budget is ... read more

For our final three weeks in Indonesia, we'd decided to stay on the Gili Islands off Lombok. We'd visited this set of three tiny islands twelve years earlier when we got married in Bali. At that time we'd chosen Gili Trawangan as our base but we'd heard it was now a bit too much of a crazy party. The next island along, Gili Meno, was still supposedly very quiet and under-developed, so this time we chose Gili Air as a happy medium. It took several days for us to settle in and make Gili Air feel like home. Partly, our timing didn't help. We arrived on the island on a no-moon, when tidal swings are the greatest. The high tide happened to fall during the middle of the day, meaning that there was very little beach. ... read more

Cocktail diving is a term we've invented for dives which are so chilled out you could fall asleep. This means lovely warm water, great visibility, no currents and lots of pretty fish. It's the kind of diving that we love! As it's been 2.5 years since our last dive we wanted to get our dive legs back with some serious cocktail diving and Gili Air looked like the ideal place to do it. We'd purposefully chosen the Gili Islands as our starting point in Indonesia as we kind of knew what we were getting. We were cheating a little because we've been to the Gilis before, almost 12 years ago when our friends, Sharon and Scott got married. We stayed on Gili T back then, the largest of the three Gili Islands, but we'd heard things ... read more

Wszedzie gdzie ... read more

Suzanne here.... For the first time ever on any of our travels, the bus didn't arrive to pick us up. To be more accurate, it was full so drove straight past us. Cue our friendly homestay host Made looking anxious and texting them. To be fair I think someone would have come back for us eventually, but as it was just down the road I hopped on the back of Made's scooter and David walked down. The boat trip with Pacha / Kuda Hitam (two brands but the same firm) cost IDR 240 each, it was rather uncomfortable. Wet gritty floor, hard narrow seats, noisy and a strong smell of diesel fumes. But it got us there. We'd decided to do Gili Air first, the smallest and furthest away from Bali and nearest to Lombok. It's ... read more

Saturday 12th March 2016 Happy to be waving goodbye to the sweat box of a room, but sad to be leaving Gili T which offered us an amazing 4 days, we left the homestay to catch the 9:30am boat to the next island on our list, Gili Air, which is only a short 10 minute ride away. Loading our bags aboard along with tonnes of other island hopping travelers, we arrived at Gili Air and made our way to our new accommodation, a detached bungalow set in a lovely green private garden. We were met by the owner of 'Yoland Guest House' and he showed us to the room. The first thing that hit us was the cool air of the aircon and we knew we'd have a good stay. After dropping off our bags we ... read more

The Gili's; Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno - 3 photogenic small desert islands all frindged with white sandy beaches, lines of coconut trees and clear turquoise seas . All 3 have their own individual identity, attracting tourists in their millions each year. Highly recommended by most people we meet. Some people visit just one island, whilst others - such as ourselves - attempt to explore them all. A booking error costing us 2 days (stuck in Makassar) and a 90min delayed flight wasn't going to stop us either. Our grand plan to get to the popular Gili's was to fly from Makassar to Bali, catch a bus from Bali to the laid back village of Padangbai, explore, stay overnight and then head straight over to the Gili's in the morning. Landing a couple hours ... read more

After having a good nights sleep but not being able to face a cold shower, I had my breakfast and got picked up along with 7 others to be taken to the harbour. Waiting with a couple from Belgium and a couple from Canada for the public boat to be full and we would be on our way. Sharing the long wooden boat with about 50 locals, boxes of beers, baskets of vegetables and fruits - 20 minutes later we had arrived at Gili Air. There are no roads on the island, so no traffic, and only one path that winds its way round - which can be walked in about 1hr. If transport is needed its by bicycle or horse and cart. The beaches are very clean with mostly white sand and clear turquoise waters ... read more

Our kind Homestay owner Susi hooked us up with a cheap ride from Kuta Lombok to Gili Air. Gili is the Indonesian word for 'small island'. It really is small on the map so we weren't too stressed about finding a place to stay. Locals were however, consistently warning us that we may not find a place. We landed at the beach beside the dock with about 30 others on a old wooden boat. Surprisingly, it seemed not one company used the government wharf which served the sole purpose of providing locals with a shady place to fish from. We decided to cut straight through the centre of the island and look for a place to stay on the far side of the island. I figured our devilish plan had not been hatched by any other ... read more
