Friday 4th March 2016 Yogyakarta, which is pronounced Jogya-karta, or simply Jogja, is the next town on our list. We'd bought the train tickets on our first day in Jakarta and after leaving the hostel at 7am for our 8am train, we boarded for what would be an 8 hour journey. We'd paid a little more for an 'Executive' train which according to the hostel was going to provide us with a more comfortable journey. The tickets had cost £18 each but for the long journey we wanted to be comfy. When the train pulled up at 7:30am I noticed it was quite a run down old looking train, for some reason, in my head I was picturing the Shinkansen bullet trains in Japan. This was not of that standard, but having said that, once on ... read more

It was a choice between Bali and Yogyakarta (Jogja) for our year-end trip, and considering the crowd heading to the former, we hopped on the less conventional destination and based ourselves in Kasongan town, some half an hour south of Jogja city to spend our 5 nights spanning 2015-end and 2016-start. Here are 7 experiences we shared while ushering in the new year: 1. Infinite sunset by Parangtritis beach We rented a motorbike and headed down south where the beach was. It was massively crowded! Lots of people enjoying all the various offerings by the beach; ATV across the sand, horse carriage, kite flying, swimming, sunbathing, etc. We were equally amazed at how everyone's having a great time despite the huge crowd. Not wanting to jostle with the locals for space, we took a stroll to ... read more

Aan ... read more

Do you know when you arrive at your new destination and you get a good feeling about a place. Well for us arriving in Yogyakarta, Indonesia gave us that same feeling and we knew that we were going to enjoy this country. And our gut feelings were right, we loved it. You might be confused about the title of this blog then, but read on and all will make sense. Arriving in Yogyakarta (pronounced "Jog-Ja-Karta") we were both itching with excitement, but also exhausted after our flight. Not quite sure what our next move should be we were torn between exploring further and getting some rest. Before we begin you may be asking; why Indonesia? For us Indonesia offered us a chance to gain an insight into such a dynamic fascinating culture, into the rich religious ... read more

Landing in Jakarta: the Airport LIA -- Language in Action, hosted their 2nd International Conference in Yogyakartha at the end of April and beginning of May...still Southeast Asia but how different the culture from Vietnam! Landing in Jakarta at the airport I found so many different groups, each wearing distinct clothing to distinguish membership in that clan as distinct from others -- different colors, different head scarves, some with particular embroidery, some wearing the headscarf in a different way, some wearing skull caps, some a kind of fez. quite extraordinary. I wanted to whip out my camera but was a little too stressed with some visa and passport challenges to fully savor those moments and my first impressions. Hotel Aryudata Changing my plans to fix those problems I had to book a hotel in Jakarta and ... read more

I have visited Bali several times since 1998, however this was to be my first visit to what I had started to think of as the "real" Indonesia. With 255 million people and 88% of the population Muslim, it has the largest Muslim population in the world. Yet although it has been an Islamic country for the last 500 years, it also has a strong history of both Hinduism and Buddhism, making it a fascinating country to visit. While obviously Islamic, with most of the women wearing hajibs and with bacon nowhere to be found in the breakfast buffets, the history of Hindu and Buddhism seemed to be integrated into the culture. I liked Yogyakarta. Despite the manic motorcycles and scooters and the cacophony of horns it has a laid back feel to it. The city ... read more

On the train to Surabaya, East Java March 30,2015 Yogyakarta is very pleasant compact city in Central Java. We have had a very enjoyable five days here. It would have been four but one was a Sunday! So what is special about Sundays? Well first it must be appreciated that Indonesia is a country on the move in many ways. It is the third most populous country in the world after India and China and it had seen substantial economic growth over the last twenty five years. Indonesians are mobile and they appreciate that Yogyakarta is the cultural hub of Java. We have met local tourists from Sumartra, Jakarta and Bali at the city's sights. So, when I went to buy tickets on Saturday for the train to Surabaya in East Java on Sunday morning I ... read more

Had to set my alarm for 05.30 to get to the airport on time for my flight to Bali. Having again a bit of an issue with the taxi driver - first him not wanting to go on the meter, would rather charge me 180,000 rupiah as opposed to 50,000, secondly driving really slowly even though there being no traffic on the road and thirdly trying to make me pay for airport parking! I gave him 50,000 as that's what it cost from airport to hotel, had a word and got out the car - annoyed from how unnecessary he had been! Sitting waiting for my plane a lady with her 8yr old daughter from Borneo wanted a photo and a hug! Very unexpected but very endearing all the same. Next I chatted to a nice ... read more

Having booked to stay for a 4th night this morning I had to move from my room to a deluxe room ( but hotel kindly offered it at the same price - I explained im a poor traveller on a budget!) the only difference being a teas made and air conditioning - as apposed to free tea 5 metres from your room and a perfectly adequate fan! After breakfast and heading off together, this time hiring a motorised rickshaw ( our guilty conscience from yesterday!) we were first taken to the sultans palace. With not really a huge amount to see we then popped back to the cafe - which is very close - to say our goodbyes to the lovely couple from Thursday. What is special about the cafe is a large cat type creature ... read more
