Today the plan was to go and do cave tubing and then go to see the large Hindu temple Prembanan. I got picked up in an Suv and driven for about 2 hours south east of Jogja. There we met up with a group of local men. It was a rather professionally run outfit with shinpads, lifejackets, helmets and headlamps provided. I brought my underwater camera so have some good pics.
It was organized by an agency in Jogja but run locally.
We scaled down the side of a slippery cliff with our tubes on our backs. And thenvthe journey started. It was a low level river and often we had to shimmy through or climb over sections. It was essentially an underground river with a large passageway but it had multiple sections that had caved in long ago. It was quite pretty. We had a blast going through although was rather short.
Afterwards we scaled up a muddy cliff maybe 70 m high with our tubes. We had lunch with some potato like vegetable and then headed back to Jogja. We were running out of time so i had the driver take me straight to Prembanan.
Its a pretty amazing temple, although it looks the same style as angkor wat. The main Stupa is 47m high with a number of smaller ones around. I was here to see the sunset.
I had also gone to another smaller temple within the grounds where i met one if the local men who is a part of the restoration of the temples. In the Merapi eruption, a number of villages disappeared killing several thousand and causing alto of damage at Prembanan from the resulting earthquakes. He showed me around noting the various parts getting restored.
After i attend the famous Rayamena Hindu ballet. I didn't particularly enjoy it. It was supposed to be the story as depicted in Prembanan reliefs but i could never tell what was going on, and the scenes and music were highly repetitive. I fell asleep a few times. That said there were some good scenes and they even burned down the set at one point. The costumes were spectacular although i couldn't differentiate between some of the main characters. There write also some scenes with young boys who were funny and admirable in their over-zealousness abduction frequent mistakes. After i headed back to my hotel to prepare for the long bus ride to Mt Bromo the next day.
