It was a packed day. We walked through the market in the morning; there were fish of all kind and in all stages of life, and after life, for sale. We tried a new fruit, "snake skin" which was actually really good! Once you peal off the skin (which kind of looks likes an old lychee) you can eat it in slices like an orange. The women let us try the various fruits and vegetables proudly showing off their selection. Then we went to visit a puppet maker. We sat in a circle and silently, without saying a word he just took a block of wood between his feet and started hacking away at it with a machete and saw. Miraculously, it morphed into a detailed puppet head of a Hindu god. After, he led us ... read more

Yesterday we literally spent the entire day in transit. Bus to the train, 4 hours on the train to the bus, and 7 hours to our hotel here. I didn't sleep much, even though I was exhausted, but I got really into my book on tape. At one point on the bus I looked over at my mom and realized that we were in the exact same position, with our lips pursed (because our books on tape were making us mad), and head to the side and knees bent and to the side and staring ahead. It was really weird to see how similar we looked, but I guess that makes sense...we ARE related after all... We arrived here around 7:30 and it was pitch dark. For some reason it was super cloudy so we couldn't ... read more

After an 11 hour journey on a minibus in heavy (and, again, completely mental) traffic from Jakarka to Pangandaran with the only highlight of the day stopping for lunch at this traditional Indonesian restaurant overlooking a valley of lush green rice fields, we arrived in Pangandaran. On the first day in Pangandaran, a few of us went for tour of the area on becak which can only be described a seat with a bike strapped to the back of it where some guy cycles you wherever you need to go (usually used as taxis). This allowed us to go off the main roads and venture down some of the back alleys and through some of the local estates. At the end of the becak tour we stopped off at the sea to watch the village people ... read more

Buengiorno tutti! Salam! Well, our weekly blog has become a once-in-a-while blog. Probably better. Especially for you. Nature is having it's way with Indonesia. Two days ago we were in Yogyakarta and in Borobodur (pictures will come as well we promiss, but not today), and the night we left a nearby volcano (Mount Merapi at about 20 km) erupted. Everybody leaving 10 km around the volcano was evacuated. It is throwing huge amounts of ashes into the air, which we are also receiving here in Pangandaran. Then there are some floods in Jakarta. And finally, an earthquake hit the coast of Sumatra, and subsequently there was a tsunami there. Anyway, we are at a safe distance from all of this and we enjoy what Pangandaran offers to us (Sun, surf, great people & good food!). After ... read more

Day 69 Bandar Lampung to Bandung (Fri 10th Sept) Left early in order to get the ferry from Sumatra across to Java Island. We arrived at the terminal by 0830 but had to wait for the next ferry (45 minutes) because the first one was already full. Its absolutely astounding how many motorbikes fit on these things! Since the ferry ride was to be a couple of hours, we went up to the top deck and commandeered some deck chairs to snooze in. The little bit of rain we got shortly after departure did nothing to quell the rather oppressive heat either. In the end, Helen and I went down to the air conditioned rooms for the last half hour of the trip. They had a movie on, and though I’m not sure what it was, ... read more

Pagandaran 7hour hot sweaty crammed smoky horrible bus to Pagandaran from Bogor. Arrived and had made friends with Martijn (Holland) and Veronique (French, who would be the first of many of the French Maffia I were to be acquainted with in Indonesia- Stephen, im thinking of you here!). We then spent the next 3 hours trying to find accomodation - again, this is no exaggeration from the very truth of it, Indonesian holidays and everywhere was still full! Finally found somewhere though and went for a meal with some other people we’d met on route. Next day, surfing lesson day! Absolutely brilliant, not a world champ yet or chasing the tubes, but I managed to get up at least for a few seconds before bundling into the sea and nearly drowning! Visited the Green Canyon, so ... read more

This isn't a very recent trip - but it's from last year so any info you glean from it will still be relevent. However as I wanted to try and get started with the ol' travel blog, and to write my first article for South East Asia Backpacker magazine (www.southeastasiabackpacker.com) I thought I'd combine the two..ahem, let me begin: Surfing for Beginners My friend has a theory as to why surf spots become popular beach destinations: the barraging waves create an aesthetically pleasing rugged coastline; a constant breeze keeps the endurances of a beaming sun bearable; the churning of the waves release a positive energy into the surrounding environment (something to do with hippy talk about ions), and the surfing community are generally a laid back, well meaning folk. However, I was not heading to ... read more

We arrived in Jakarta around 8pm by Lion Air, the flight was good, we only wanted to stay here for a quick stop then leave the next day for Panandaran by the Sea. We caught the train (Posh class with aircon and a snack) for about 2pounds, took us 4hrs to get there and the views onthe way were lovely, really high up in the mountains, looking down on rice fields and villages. We caught a local bus the rest of the way and met a really nice local lady who owned a hotel called Komodo Island Hotel, so we agreed to take a look, as we didnt arrive there untlil 11pm, we are glad we stayed it was really relaxed and friendly staff, but she did like to put chocolate sauce on anything you ordered, ... read more
