My flight finally touched down in Jakarta after over 19 hours of travel. I wasted no time in getting a bus into the city which slowly worked its way through grid-locked traffic to Gambir train station. Rather than hang around in the city, which is supposed to be uninteresting and polluted I caught the train right away to Yogyakarta - a mere 7 hours away. The train was spacious and comfortable and left promptly at 8pm. I sat next to a friendly Indonesian man who was helpful in providing information on my potential destinations. He was not helpful in allowing me to sleep though and proceeded to snore loudly the entire way. I arrived in Yogyakarta (exhausted) at about 4am - the streets lacked activity but plenty of becak (cycle rickshaw) drivers were sleeping in their ... read more

Voila! Finally I've reached Ijen plateau! :D :D :D so the route I took to explore Ijen was: Bondowoso - Sempol - Belawan - Paltuding - IJEN!! - Taman Sari - Banyuwangi.. Let's start!! DAY 1 Started from my lovely city, Malang, from 8 am with my new travelmate from German, Anna :) and sure we kept using the economic way. Economic bus with no air-con (hell yeah!) for almost 2 hours to reach Bondowoso. But when we passed Probolinggo town, all the bus passengers asked to change into another bus which looked more scary than the first one.. It felt like the bus can be easily broken and crashed only by gentle smack :P hehe.. Along our way to Bondowoso, the bus couldn't afford to stop every hundreds kilometres to pick other passengers or just ... read more

My final destination in Java is Kawah Ijen, a colourful crater lake set amidst coffee plantations and remnant rainforest. It's quite a hassle getting there via a combination of bus, minibus and ojek, but not particularly difficult if you charter your own vehicle. I, of course, do it the hard way, but make a few more friends in the process. My trip begins with a bus from Probbolingo to Bondowoso, passing the massive coal powered power plant on the north coast before ascending through verdant green hills and down to Bondowoso. Here I must take another bus to Wonosari, where I change to a minibus for the climb up the potholed road to Sempol. There I negotiate an ojek to Pos Paltuding, where I take a room for the night. The next morning I begin the ... read more

This has to be the world's worst job; Wanted - Sulphur Collector Dedicated and determined individual required to collect sulphur from the interior of an active volcano. Must be physically fit (at the moment) as you will be required to walk 16 km daily, ascending and descending a tricky slippery rocky sheer track of about 800m, whilst balancing up to 80kgs of rock sulphur on a bamboo pole. You must not be adverse to the physical disfigurement that this pole will cause to your shoulders, or the sores and lesions etc. You will be responsible for supplying your own gas mask, without it you will develop a hacking rasping lung complaint due to the sulphuric acid that condenses in your throat. 27 October 2009 - 28 October 2009 TOUR: Coffee Plantation and Ijen Plateau 2 day tour, including transport to Ijen and then Banyuwangi port, one nights accommodation--Rp400,000 Tired but satisfied we had enough time for a warm cup of tea and some breakfast before we set off on our platation tour at 9.30am. This is how the agent described it: " We will drive to probolinggo where you will be transferred onto a nice big air conditioned bus that will then take you to Ijen. We will take you to a coffee plantation and factory and there you will stay at a nice hotel in the plantation grounds. You will also visit a hot spring. The next day you will wake up at 5am and head off to the ijen crater before being transported to the ... read more

After a good night's sleep and a few more bowls of noodles at Mr. Tasrip's we had pretty much recovered from both the physical exertion and the emotional tension of our climb up the volcano. We were ready to go in search of a bit of gastronomic variation. Since Ranu Pani is little more than cluster of homes, there is no public transport. So we hopped on the back of two motorbikes and caught a lift along through the dense jungle to the nearest town. Through a series of clanging minibusses and smoky public buses, we eventually ended up back at Probolingo. Not where we'd expected to be. Apparently this wide detour was the only way to catch transport towards our intended destination, the mountainous Ijen Plateau. I say towards, because according to our guidebook and ... read more
