Plans were made...transport sorted out. We arranged a private driver to bring us to Gilimanuk in the Nort-West of Bali where we would catch a ferry to Java. 10 am, no driver, 10h30, no driver, okay, I was getting very nervous and furious. Those guys they had been bothering us so much and when finally we agreed on a price (a lot higher then 1 month ago but it was high season now ) they take the piss on us. The driver shows up accidently, and for once Jesper let go of his anger... I made my conclusion fast, asked the hotel receptionist to arrange a taxi to the busstation north of Denpasar. This is what we've been wanting to do more, so here we go. We said goodbye to Sebastiaan and the taxi arrived 10 ... read more

Early This June 2012, I was joining Ijen Festival (the story is http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/Isam-si-Isam/Trips/19728).(if the link not working, just click the trips) The festival was initiated by a group of local Youths that love travelling and want to lift up Bondowoso to the world's traveling stage. According to the committee, They will make the festival as an annual event in Bondowoso. Lucky them that the regent of Bondowoso supported them,so in term of funding the event,it was not really matter for them. But a bit surprise for Me that there is no member of local tourism department there to watch and check how the festival is going on (maybe some of them were there on the opening ceremony). I want to say to them:"Hello guys..!! this is actually your job." With some participant come from other countries ... read more

This is D day. I woke up 4.30 this morning. Taking shower after morning prayer, I dressed up for the parade. Yes, the participants are required to dress up according to their traditional culture for the parade. This time I choosed Malay simple dress, because I am using it every week in Brunei, so no need special preparation. Back to the time when I still live in Sumatra, this dress also part of Our culture, even though We only using it on special occasion like wedding party. 6.40 am. I and Assifa saying good bye to Our host Mr Taufiq and his wife. We took our lugage with Us because according to the schedule given by the committee, We will depart to Sempol (coffee plantation near Mount Ijen) right after lunch today. For Our host, it ... read more

When we arrived at Attaqwa Mosque, We saw Kaska and Johaina (from Philippines) are sitting on the stairs. But why only two of them? Where are the others? We approach them and then we find out that we are left behind. There is one person that we know, sitting on other side of the stairs (I know he is one of the committee yesterday). We approach him asked if he can help us to contact the committee on the truck. He called someone and then tell us that one of the truck (the participant are transported by police trucks) is returning to the city to pick us up. After waiting for about 45minutes, the guys is approaching us and said that there will be no truck returning to the city for us. Then he took us ... read more

The flight from Kuala Lumpur to Surabaya was smooth. Not much to see, just clouds. But when the plane entering Java shore,I saw a magnificent view. While most of land area still covered with fog,I saw in the distance a mountain standing high with clouds covering half it's lower part.So it was looked like the mountain is hanging on the air. I was made appointment with MG (another participant) to meet in Juanda Airport. After 30minutes,her flight is landing and from there We start our journey together. MG was not alone there is Ariane,a Filipina. We took DAMRI from the airport to Purabaya bus terminal.Kiki (friend of MG) was already there. She handed over "nasi pecel" to us for our lunch on our way to Bondowoso. All the way to Bondowoso was filled with sharing story and experience between Me and the two girls. ... read more

JAVA: Ijen...Danger, Poisonous Gas. My image of Ijen is a turquoise crater lake with sulphur workers extracting that noxious yellow element...as Ali captured in his blog . But in true travelling, everyone's experience is different, notwithstanding we may visit the same locales, or even the same paths & lookouts. And when we visited Ijen...that is how it was for us. Joe had warned us Ijen had just become active days before we hit Yogyakarta...villages were being evacuated...he did not know if we would be able to access the crater. So instead of cancelling that portion of our trip...we booked extra time there..!!! In planning our trip and choosing accommodation, I had been seduced by pictures of Ijen Resort & Villas at Banywangi...accessed by the roughest road imaginable...so said all the reviews...so I was determined to score ... read more

I woke up very early again on thursday to take a few more photos of Bromo, post my blog, and have breakfast before catching my minibus back down the mountain at 9am. Once we had picked up the other tourists, including 3 girls I had met on the Merapi climb (Diana and Jackie from Germany, and Kim from America), it took only an hour or so to make our way to Probolinggo where we changed to another minibus. From there it was an interesting 5 hour drive with some great scenery including rice fields, sugarcane fields, forests, coffee plantations, and some cute villages, before arriving at our guesthouse 7km past the town of Sempol. Our hotel had a cold water pool as well as a spring-fed hot tub which was tempting but being dusk and a ... read more
