As my homestay mother says, nationalistic (and very masculine) monuments like this have become 'decorations.' Clearly so and you see them everywhere throughout Indonesia.

I didnt find the beach or the town particularly special but it was very nice at sunrise. And the drive through some of Java's most hard to reach (and poor) mountains along the coast has some stunningly beautiful landscapes....especially rice terraces.

I ate many meals at convenience stores along the way in order to speed up my journey. Every restaurant turned into a lengthy social event otherwise.

Mornings provide nice light for viewing and nicer weather for the strenuous labor of growing rice.

In the more hard to reach mountains of Java agriculture and logging industry are all the older people know. Being old for those that are poorer seems to entail hard labor for the body......this old woman struck me on the way.

The great General Sudirman somehow marched through the mountains near Pacitan to eventually defeat the Dutch has a nice monument set in the remote mountains here. The view is really nice.
