AirAsia twice daily flights to the city of Bandung provided a fuss-free option for folks like us wanting to explore exotic getaway alternatives from Singapore. Dubbed the "City of Flowers" during the Dutch colonial times, Bandung provided a cool relief at night when temperatures hover around 21 degrees on the mercury. These days, traffic jams are the norm on weekends when thrones of visitors mobbed the 30-odd factory outlets in the city.

Our 1hr 40mins flight to the city was uneventful having encountered moments of turbulences prior to descending at the Husein Sastranegara Airport. Similar to our previous experience at Yogyakarta Airport, it took a while to clear through the customs even though we were the only flight that landed this afternoon. The only difference was that foreign visitors were few and far in between.

At the arrivals, we parted 50,000 Rupiahs for a taxi to our destination - the Hilton Bandung located about 20 minutes away from the airport. At about SGD150 per night, I would describe it an "affordable luxury experience" under the Hilton Brand. At the end of our 3 nights stay, we left the hotel satisfied, with absolutely no regrets of splurging on our accomodation choice.

It was closed to dinner time when we completed checking-in. We slowly made our way to the Istana Plaza, about 15 minutes walk from Hilton. The Istana housed several names we were familiar with back home - Breadtalk, JCO Donuts, Honeymoon Dessert and the Giant Supermarket. The departmental store anchor was Matahari, a well-known local chain targetting the middle class market.

We had a fulfilling dinner at Eastern, a Chinese Restaurant popular among the locals. Some basic knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia was expected since the wait-staffs were quintessential Indonesian locals with limited knowledge of the English vocabulary. It helped that the menu had English language translations and the colorful pictures were a nice touch. We rounded our evening with a nice serving of durian pancakes and mango sago pomelos at Honeymoon Dessert before making our way back to Hilton.

Since we had arranged for our driver to pick us up at 6.45am the next morning, we decided to call it a day early in anticipation of the long day ahead of us.
