Claire: I thought I'd start for a change! Well I can safely say that today has been far the best day so far! I can not begin to describe how perfect today was! We arrived at the harbour at 7.30 and quickly realised that the pier was not a joke, and that you did actually have to climb on all fours in places to get from one wooden plank to the other, Indiana Jones style. Also that the holes dotted around the pier were not an artistic statement, more that the pier was in fact just falling in to the sea. After this mini-adventure we found our boat and our dive team, and were met initially by a guy a year older than us from Q.E boys! (Nice to meet London lads for a change!) There ... read more

Komodo is the reason people dive. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it any justice, because words cannot describe this yet-untouched underwater paradise. The corals are multi-coloured and as lush and vibrant as the vegetation on land, the schools of fish are varied and abundant, the sea turtles are peaceful and within arms-reach. It makes you understand where the fine people at Pixar got their inspiration for Finding Nemo. Only having a few days to enjoy the wonders this national park has on offer, the dive centre was my first stop after the bus arrived in Labaun Bajo. I planned to take advantage of my time here and booked two full days of diving with the lovely folks at Dive Komodo. The divemasters were knowledgeable and the equipment was in good condition ... read more

Ellie: We set off today to Labuan Bajo with a ticket saying "Lion Air" in hand. We landed in a propellor plane saying "Wings Air." Hmmm. Well, as a lady called Olga (who happened to be a Jehovah's witness) had advised us on Hoga, "TII": This Is Indonesia. We're here at least. We've had an interesting day, rather too interesting to be documented in full here because we're anxious to start tonight's film, but have successfully organised two boat trips to the islands of Rinka and Komodo with a company called "Dive Komodo," run by an Australian called Greg. We'll be doing two dives with probably around ten other tourists, all legit and PADI certified, promise. Our hotel backs on the beach where we've just watched the most incredible sunset and Claire had fun showing off ... read more

After almost two weeks in Labuanbajo, it was time to start heading out across Flores towards Maumere, the town we were to fly out of. We pre-booked a "travel bus" the night before, which are supposed to be a step up from the regular public bus, but not a lot more expensive. It was quite a comfortable and uncrowded bus, but it still suffered all the delays of a regular bus - we set off 1/2 an hour late, we stopped to get a tyre changed after only 20 minutes of travel, and we had to stop several times to clean up the bus after children threw up (a common occurrence all over Asia it seems). The journey was beautiful at first, winding through the mountains past lush rice paddies and ramshackle buildings, but when the ... read more

We bought our tickets in Padang Bai and said fairwell to Bali again as we set off towards Lombok. Other intention was to try to get to Flores - several islands further east - in order to visit Komodo National Park and see some Komodo Dragons in the wild, but the hassle of getting there was very off putting. We'd decided to go to the main bus station on Lombok to see how easy it would be to get tickets are far east as possible but if it was going to be too much grief, we'd skip the whole thing and perhaps climb another volcano. The five hour ferry journey passed pretty slowly and was uneventful except for seeing a lone dolphin swimming and jumping in the water about half way through. Of course, the views ... read more

ahoy mateys... tomorrow is our last offical day in labuan bajo-a sleepy fishing village on the island of flores. it's a very simple village and a different world than what we experienced in ubud. this area, a gateway to komodo national park is a haven for divers and snorkellers... chris is in his element. he is totally infatuated with the ocean and there is nothing i can do about it! we have spent the last three days on a boat with komodo divers. we wake up around 5, have breakfast, and then head on down to the infamous wooden jetty with a depature at around 7:30 or 8 and then we are at sea all day that encompasses two dives and then we set sail for home around 4... when we first arrived in labuan bajo ... read more

24 November 2009 - 26 November 2009 HOTEL: Gardena Hotel The most popular place in town and really one of the only places. The others are pretty ramshackle. Gardena is OK price-wise and has a nice restaurant and outside seating area with great views of the harbour. Staff don't speak much English though, and rooms can be a bit unclean. After our "farewell party" aboard our Perama boat and a very decent nights sleep, we had a chance to explore our first town on our trip through Flores. Flores isn't exactly small, spanning about 700km west to east (actually, that's how long the "Trans Flores Highway is!), and 1.8million people, it's a pretty large island. It's also a very poor island and Labuanbajo, clinging to the western tip of Flores is no exception. When we had ... read more

Or how we got stuck in east Nusa Tenggara. As I’m writing this we’re sitting in the departure lounge of the airport of Denpasar, Bali. We’re not having a nice coffee, we’re not having any food. We’re not even having a plate of nasi goreng. What we are having is lukewarm water and cookies. The reason for this is that we had to leave our last few rupiah at the airport in Bima, Sumbawa for an unexpected departure tax and all the ATMs at this airport are broken. Since I left my US dollars in my backpack by accident and my backpack is in transit between planes, we’re stuck here without any money. Before I tell you the story of all the wonderful things we’ve seen and experienced over the past three weeks, I’ll elaborate on ... read more
