Bali’s Graceful Geger Beach

Kuta, Seminyak and Nusa Dua have one major thing in common: they are seen as some of the most popular tourist beaches in Bali, Indonesia. Although they do have a lot to offer in terms of beach activities and general convenience, they neither have the nicest sand nor the clearest water on the famous island. During a recent trip to Bali, I had the opportunity to check out a bunch of beaches ranging from these world famous strips to some secluded gems. One of those gems turned out to be Geger Beach.

After renting a moto from my guesthouse in the Kuta region, I made my way south past the Ngurah Rai International Airport en route to the gated resort area of Nusa Dua. Some friends of mine were staying at the tranquil Ayodya Resort, so I figured that I would check out a few beaches in the vicinity. A colleague from work suggested Geger Beach which is about a ten minute moto ride south of Nusa Dua. She thought it was a nice secluded spot to get away from the tourists crowds, so I limited my time on the sand at Nusa Dua and travelled south to the access road. I managed to drive past the access road because it wasn’t very visible. Needless to say, I am certain that I wouldn’t have found Geger unless I had my guide book in hand.

As I walked down towards the water it took only a few seconds to realize how much clearer the water was at Geger in comparison to the other beaches I had visited during my two week stay on the island. The sand was white, very clean and the beautiful limestone headlands only added to the sheer splendor of the surroundings. Only a few European tourists were at the beach when I arrived and after an hour I had the beach all to myself. As the sun began to set it became apparent that this beautiful beach was slowly starting to be blanketed by the cooling water of the Bali Sea. The tide continued to transition from low to high and this was my cue to leave this charming beach only to return three days later.

Important tip about Geger Beach: The beach is ideal at low tide. At high tide the beach is difficult to even see as the waves touch the limestone fringed coastline.
