Hi! We would like to start this blog off with a request/ challenge. We have a good friend in Olympia who has a son named Jayson. He is currently in 3rd grade and learning about our world. He has recently started a worldwide stamp collection and we’ve been trying to help him by sending a postcard from each country that we have traveled to. I would like to ask that each of you write down his address and when you travel outside the US in the next few months please send him a postcard from whatever country you are in. I know that many of you have friends and family living and traveling abroad. Would you please send this request to them and ask them to send him a card. We would like to see if ... read more

We flew from Singapore to Denpasar airport in Bali on October 16th. We learned from another passenger on the flight that nearly all hotels in Bali were booked due to the Muslim holiday Hari Raya, since many Indonesians were spending their holiday in Bali. Our usual method of taking a taxi to a hotel-filled area and wandering until we found one might not work this time, it seemed. After getting our luggage we began visiting tourist counters at the airport, a practice we generally avoid. One after another had nothing available except for posh $60 plus hotel rooms. We finally found a hotel with two $25 rooms still available, in the seaside city of Sanur. We snatched up one of the rooms, and recruited another hotel-less couple to take the other. The four of crowded into ... read more

The full story of our week in bali.... After arriving at midnight we picked up our bags and met our guide (James) out the front of the airport. He took us to our hotel where we checked in. By this point we had been awake for about 34+ hours, so, you would of thought we were ready to hit the sack. Nah! got a beer out the fridge and headed to the lobby and toasted the start of our travels. Sunday Awoke at 11am after a well needed sleep, too late for breakfast so we hit the pool for some sunbathing... yeah! Pool isn't heated at all, but after laying in 34 degrees for an hour its very welcoming. Monday Pretty much the same, dinner in the pool side bar with a bottle of red vino ... read more

Hey All Have finally arrived in Sydney and have a pc that really has broadband, not just pretending, like the one at the hotel in Bali. And what can I say about Bali, it was awesome. Hotel, weather (30 all week), room, facilities, service, food, even the gym, was fantastic. We had a really chilled week in Bali, the main aim being to get over the jetlag before arriving in Sydney (and maybe get a bit of a tan (or sunburn in Laz's case!!)) We ventured out mid week in Bali, for a bit of fun and a bit of culture. 1st, white water rafting down the Ayung River. The water level was fairly low but there were a few rapids in places and our tour certainly knew how to hit them. We were sharing the ... read more

The last few days in Ubud we spent walking around the local villages and checking out a traditional Balinese Kecak Dance. The Kecak is a dramatization of an ancient hindu story and features fire walking and young women performing dances while in a trance. It was pretty interesting. While exploring the villages we walked through rice paddies and terraces while pondering who decided to bury grass in stagnant mud and then eat it in the first place. By the looks of the paddies I am not sure that would have crossed my mind. We also walked through the temple in Ubud where somebody let us go back into the royal family's courtyard. After 4 days inland we were thirsting for some waves but seeing some of the heavier breaks in the south we decided to head ... read more

Well after our great flight with Qantas we arrived in Bali at some hour of the morning! There is a set rate for taxis at the airport and we wanted to be some where that was not built up but not too far away as it was very late so we opted for Sanur opposed to the busy Kuta! we got a taxi and he took us to the cheapest place he knew! In the dark Bali looked a lot more built up than we had thought it would be, we arrived at the hotel and had to wake up the owners they showed me 2 rooms one with a/c and one without! He asked a lot for the room rate, well alot from what we have been used too and we had no choice really ... read more

Sunday 20th Left Ubud about 10am and an hour or so later arrived at Sanur. We didn't really know what to expect, it's not mentioned in our guide and there isn't great deal of information available about it, but it loked good in postcards. So that is where we went. Pretty uninspring place really. It was supposed to be the first 'purpose built resort town', but then a town called Nusa Dua was built and overshadowed it completely. Pretty, fairly pleasant, just a bit too quiet. It would be great for the elderly. Found a 'homestay', which is basically a generic name here for a hotel that doesn't have a swimming pool, it was nice enough. Called Santi which was behind a shop. It had Swastiki symbols on the headboard on the doors, everywhere, but it ... read more

Good morning from Bali 125,000 miles, 25hrs travelling - Bali beckoned and we arrived safe and sound during the early hours of Sunday morning (4th Feb). The heat (over 30c all day and not much cooler at night) plus the loss of 8hrs in time has taken us a few days to adjust. The beatiful and fascinating island is worth the effort. We spent the first 3 days enjoying the peacful hotel garden, pools and beach. On Monday eve we dined on the beach eating grilled Red Snapper & Mahi Mahi with candlelight and live music. After seeing sunrise (Tuesday) we put on our 'intrepid explorers' hats and ventured further afield. Its quite difficult to get anywhere by public transport- no railway sytem, very little in the way of local buses- lots of local minibuses that ... read more
