“With its pounding surf, emerald-green rice terraces and exceptionally artistic culture, the small volcanic island of Bali has long been Indonesia’s premier tourist destination.” - The Rough Guide to Southeast Asia. Bali has long been a favourite holiday destination for Australians, akin to the way Irish and English flock to the resorts in Spain. Most remember Bali being in the news for all the wrong reasons in 2002, when 2 bombs rocked a nightclub and an Irish bar in Kuta, Bali’s most famous resort, killing over 200 people, the majority being Australian holiday makers. Having read about how reprisals and religious conflicts did not ensue, due in part to Bali’s composed Hindu leadership, and that tourist numbers were healthier than ever, we were confident of our safety travelling around the island. The news of more bombs ... read more

Well, thought I better update u all starting with heaven to let u know we are both still alive and kicking, had lots of adventures, been very difficult to update blog-internet issues, travelling so much so stopping for web access just not happened and well our excuse in Bali is we would have been bankrupt (which we may well aready be) as was 6 pounds/min...obviously we needed the money for copious cocktails...priorities! So arrived in Densapar late on 8th and headed straight to Laguna Resort and Spa....sign at entrance brought big smiles "welcome to paradise". Porters, carpets, and entrance lobby, AC, a bed still with springs (and a matress), pillows!, slippers, gowns, lights....I could really go on but I expect these r only luxuries of a normal hotel room but to us they were heaven. Following ... read more

Hey, Just a qiuckie to say i've arrived safely to Bali, Ellies hotel is amazing and Caroline and David are fantastic here!! Last night in sydney was a total tits u and all went wrong but ended up really funny! So, Jack W and I were due on the boat cruise; show dinner blah blah....we started in a bar and were both a little on edge as we knew it was our last night, so began to reminis about the good old days when we were together and how jacks grandad told us about where to travel to and well it all got a little emotional so decided to just go on the boat and leave the bar! On our way to the boat we noticed no one is on it; there is a rope up ... read more

This will be our last entry about Bali (Waaaaaaaa) I'll just tell you about the hotel well-some of the other hotels had their own turtle/elephant 's but this one had it's own beach with white sand and the clearest sea I've ever seen. The night before we left, we went to see a Kechak dance at a temple in Puta Wasu, it was about Rama and Sita. The evil monster Ravana had kidnapped Sita, and Rama and the magic King, and Monkey god Hanuman were trying to save her. At one point - Hanuman got caught, and the giants (bad guys) tried to burn him to death.....but as soon as they put him on the fire Hanuman started doing a funny little dance on top of the fire! (coconut husks, set on fire by the dancers) ... read more

Trying to get to the internet cafe turned out to be rather an adventure tonight. As we headed out of the hotel the main streets of Kuta were completly flooded (chech out the photos). Dinner is also proposing problems with no power on the block we came to too get dinner! However dispite the terential rain we had a great day today. We ventured into Nusa Dua and successfully mastered our second pool challenge at The Laguna Resort and Spa. The beach was beautiful in Nusa Dua and we spend a few hours wondering the beach and swimming in the sea. After feeling exausted from the heat at the beach we headed into Dempasar where we found a very interesting mall that was a huge chaotic department store...not to mention we were the only white people ... read more

I graduated from college in 1974 and I planned all Summer for a trip to the North Shore of Oahu. I still recall a line from a Surfer Magazine from that time that went something like, "No matter if you are the hottest thing back home, it will take you at least two weeks to get your sea legs on the North Shore." Well I certainly don't consider myself the hottest thing back home, but it has taken two weeks to get my sea legs here in Bali. The waves have more power and more speed than I am used to. Take offs are often done under the lip and a turn as you get to your feet (not after) is usually required. The wave might have a soft section but then it might hit a ... read more

After a long day of travels from Borneo to Kuala Lumpur and a seven hour layover in the KL airport, we finally arrived in Bali. (Thank God Eddie came to hang out with us at the KL airport or else we really would have been bored!) We arrived in Bali and had arranged airport pickup to our first hotel. We decided we deserved a bit of a splurge while in Bali so we booked a little nicer hotel called "Ellie's" and headed there. It is between the main tourist area of Kuta Beach and the upscale tourist beach of Nusa Dua. Just a note about Ellie's: it is an amazing little hotel that is run by an English couple who are so helpful and all the staff is amazing. We settled in for the night and ... read more

Bali Back on Bali we avoided the extortionate taxis at the airport and walked out of the parking lot with our luggage. We eventually hailed down a cab to take us to Nusa Dua which would be our home for the next night before flying on to Singapore. We got on so well with our cab driver that we decided to hire him for the rest of the day. We had a busy day planned, first stop, was the temple at Uluwatu, this was quite pretty, but to be honest not that great, too many plastic fires being set off. We then headed to Dreamland for sunset to take pictures of all the surfers that we had been told about. When we arrived there were no surfers and no surf. I ventured in for a quick ... read more
