No alarm and woke up at 9.30 today. Decided to walk along beachfront looking for breakfast by heading right instead of left this time. Soon came across a couple of restaurants. Went to Ocean Blue and ordered the special for $4.50. For that price I got Bali gold coffee pot, large glass of pineapple juice, scrambled eggs on toast with sausage, tomato, a bowl of fruit mixed with yoghurt and muesli (yummy), and a bread basket which had two slices of different bread, a croissant and a slice of banana bread. Wow what a full load. We then walked up to the next cross street and headed back towards Legian Street. Lots of shops along here and we picked up some items. I even managed to get myself an authentic pair of Billabong thongs for $10- ... read more

Alarms off very early today to get us all up and dressed and off to Breakfast in readiness for our pick up at 8.45am. We thought the easiest thing to do was to have breakfast at the poolside buffet to not waste time. They charged $12- per person and it was pretty normal buffet choice. I had some corn flakes and then a couple of fried eggs as well on toast. The minivan arrived on time to take us to Benoa Harbour for our departure via high speed catamaran to Lembongan Island. The catamaran caters for 150 people but today only about 30 on board. I decided to buy a waterproof bag for my mini camera so I could take some shots of the is whilst snorkelling. I had seen someone use one of these with ... read more

Woke up to find it was raining slightly outside and sky looked pretty threatening. Made me realise I have failed to detail any weather for the trip so far. I can say it has been the same every day. Rather predictable. Overcast with sun trying to peek through every now and then, temps from 25-31 and very humid. If I don’t say anymore, you can presume the weather is unchanged ! Started off the day by dropping off laundry nearby. Only $20-for 7.2kg to be ready for collection tonight. Went to breakfast at a place nearby. Looked cool, as we had to climb into this elevated Bali Hut. Went downhill from there. We were the only people there (WARNING !!!!!). Ordered some drinks. Kerry had cappuccino and I ordered a Latte as were not sure what ... read more

We had Gede arranged as driver for our transport to Legian for $25. A bit worried about whether his car would be OK, but it did fit our luggage in snuggly. Really good having him as we talked about stuff all the way for the hour long trip and he was good at speaking English and had a great personality as well. He told us about how he had a dream to go working on cruise ships like his younger brother but he had an accident (i.e. had a baby, got married and dream ended !). His brother has just returned from Costa Cruises in Europe after being away from family for 8 months and he earns a lot more than they get in Bali and supports his family. Gede has some land near rice patties ... read more

We just had the most perfect, relaxing, enjoyable 5 days in Bali ever :) This was not a holiday for sightseeing, adventure or new experiences. This was a 5 day break, before the monotonous routine of work and school got back underway. On a recommendation from a friend we stayed at the Kumula Pantai hotel in Legian. It is a bit hidden away though, and is actually behind one of the restaurants along the beach so you dont even see it initally. But...it was suprisingly nice! Very bali'ish with marble everything, giant statues, winding gardens and dark wooden furniture. But all very clean with no mould in site and although i'd say set up in the '80's there was nothing wrong with it at all. It had 2 huge pools which we spent hours in every ... read more

Our visa got extended and we picked it up at a office in Jimbaran that helps a lot of foreign people :) . Then off to the same hotel as we arrived to do some planning... we knew we wanted to go to Java, but that was that! We enjoyed the pool, the food and Legian beach more then the first time. Skye and Jesper did some body boarding, great! Liv unfortunately broke a piece of her tooth in the pool. Stef didn't feel so well the day we were planning to go, so we stayed an extra day ! Here we met Sebastiaan, a 'Gentenaar' travelling around for the past 6 months and still heading to the Gili's. We had food together at the night market that we had been in search for previously, but ... read more

We had been excited about this one and here we are....! Yes, we talk about Bali, and for us it's another kind of Indonesia ( until now we can only compare with Sumatra ). People are more of the world here, especially the hawkers on the beach whom approach you to sell their stuff, no thank you no thank you no no no ! Lots of them speak a bit of English and luckily the nice thing is that they are still very friendly... Living standards are higher, we've seen some real poor villages driving through Sumatra. What really puts us in a good mood is the climate; so far temperatures have been really perfect and humidity has dropped so much compared to Sumatra and Malaysia, :) In Kota Bahru for example we just lost all ... read more

Bali....well not exactly what I imagined. Bali is provides the Australians package holidays, the equivalent of Spain for the Brits. The prices were a bit of a shock but with the strong Oz economy in retrospect it was not surprising. It was difficult to find a room which was not part of a resort. Eventually we found a room above a shop for $15per night. It seemed a new family business venture and they were very welcoming. For us it was a stop over for our Komodo trip and planning Japan so in fairness we didn't venture far. We stayed in Legian (just north of the Kuta party zone), it consisted of streets of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops and family temples. Our highlights were jumping in the big surfers waves (George loved the washing machine experience!) ... read more

I've been wanting to write about this for a while. It happened not long after I had arrived. Me a Swedish guy and a German all in a pool. Both guys are air head surfers. Talk turns to me. I tell them I'm Bristich. German says "not a real European then?". Should I talk offense to this? Wasn't offended to continued on. Both men talked about Sharks. Swede seems to this they're friendly creatures. German disagrees. They find out I've dived with great whites. Swede is in awe. Then 2nd German dick head arrives (can I just poinbt out her that I like Germans. E.g. Christoph was the loveliest German ever and I liked him very much). It's just these 2 seemed to have a problem with me. Or more correctly with the Brits. The Swede ... read more
