Day Two - 25 June 09 A sunny day, our highlight for today is Goa Gajah Temple, Kintamani, Titra Empul Temple, Tegallalang and end stop at Ubud. On the way to Goa Gajah Temple, we dropped by at Batik Factory, Painting House, Celuk Village, famous with its Gold and Silver work and Mas Village, a wood crafting center. We are introduced to the many varied faces of Bali. Goa Gajah Temple is also known as Elephant Cave, one of the oldest relics in Bali. The whole area is sectioned off into several chambers, each dedicated to a different god or goddess; we took more than one hour to explore the whole area. One the major spot is the famous religious bath side, believed to be separated for both men and women for sacred cleaning ceremony. Another ... read more

I think we were surprised to learn that Bali was not typically Indonesian but an unusual island with a mixture of Hindi and indigenous culture. Bali is an anomaly – not only is it the only Hindu enclave in the world’s biggest Muslim nation, but the Hinduism practised here would be unrecognisable in India, flavoured as it is by Buddhism and, more significantly, animism. The people of Bali worship the big things - the trees, rocks and, most importantly, the mountain. We left the boat by tender and landed at a resort village where we were greeted by an extremely friendly reception organised by the ship's agents, but also to unbelievable levels of hassle by local sales people, of which more later. We were herded onto the coach for the tour (we had used some more ... read more

After a few days we were ready to head back to Ubud. Our journey back lead us high up into the mountains close to Kintamani. We drove through slopes where there were several varieties of fruits, coffee, and cloves are grown (plantations). We enjoyed freshly cut mangos (Sanjay’s favorite), passion fruit (Kyle’s favorite), and tamarillos. Also on the way back we stopped at the Tirtha Temple close to Tamparksiring where many people come to bath in the holy water that pours forth from a natural spring. ... read more

Toya Bunkah Glorious morning with a fine blue mist over Danau Batur. Think I must have had nearly 12 hours sleep last night barring the interruptions from the numerous cockerals that seem to be just outside my window. Yesterday nearly went horribly wrong: I'd set my alarm for 3:30am, thinking that Nyoman was to knock at 3:45, waking me for the morning's treck, however the agreed time seemed to have shunted to 2:45am and so in the rush I missed a much needed warm shower as the night had been chilly under the thin blanket. I didn't really know what the plan was but we first stopped for water and suggary tea at a little shop in Toya Bunkah where I discovered I was supposed to catch the trecking bus to the foot of Batur. What an amazing place. A large rippling grey lake within a huge 300 year old blow-out caldera surrounded by several little poor vilages living on the edge in the shaddow of the active mountain: Gnung Batur. The volcano last errupted in 2002 I believe, but there was also a small 'leak' last year the bubbling lava from which I should be able to walk by when I trek up to the smaller active crater early tomorrow morning. I can't wait. A lovely man - Nyoman - (pronounced N-yeoman), accosted me when I entered the Kintermani region and took me to his losman, sorted me out with a discounted room overlooking the lake and a bargin guided tour up the mountain starting at 4am tomorrow. (The Aussie girl also staying at the home-stay has paid 50 US ... read more

At 5:30 I heard a frantic ringing of a bell which I assumed must have meant breakfast, so I awoke and sat keenly waiting. Breakfast didn't appear until 7 so I felt pretty stupid all told! Both dives of the day were on the Liberty, a boat sitting just of the Tulamben beach and laying on her side in between 5 and 30 metres of water. Its a large and imposing bulk to dive around, and despite its heavy coral coating it is still possible to see what is what. I was buddied up with Yoshi, a Japanese diving instructor working in Australia. We also had a divemaster to guide us around the wreck. We stayed on the outside of the wreck, and saw a lot of life including a Mantis Prawn (I didnt even know ... read more
