I was just playing on the net and decided to see if there was an ashram in Bali and lo and behold, I found one. The Gendong Gandhi Ashram sounded just the place for me. Away from it all, peaceful and right on the beach. Simple food, vegetarian with sea food - perfect, shared together as per usual ashram life with a few yoga lessons thrown in. So that is where I have been these last four days. The people and the place is wonderful, simple (like me) and good for the soul. They have a really extensive library with all sorts of yoga, philosophy, Hindu and scripture books and I managed to read three. I purposely didn’t take my laptop so that I would truly be away from it all. They also house a few ... read more

This morning, we drove up to Candi Dasa (about an hour north of Sanur) so Diane could dive and I could hang out at the resort by the pool and ocean. The sun was out and the drive up was very pretty…so lush. It’s funny seeing people walking their pigs on leashes and their herds of ducks, while all the stray dogs run wild. Never in America! We passed rice paddy terraces, which I am obsessed with and think I was a rice farmer in a previous life. Diane was the only one diving today, so on the drive up it was just Diane, Toto (dive master and magician), the driver and me. Toto did magic tricks the whole way and we tried to figure them out to no avail. The resort where they took the ... read more

Day 9: Balinese Hangovers & The Balian’s Cure Dawn arose with pain and discomfort. Classic hangover amidst tropic humidity: weighty, dank and stale with arak and puke on the breath. At the breakfast I chose not to attend, stories were told. A group of yogis walked into Monkey Forest at 2AM and chanted the Gyatri Mantra for one hour. Others swam nude in the pool, lounged in a room, and then sobered each other with their words. I kept my secrets to myself and left the unspoken for the balian. A balian is a traditional Balinese healer. Typically a man, he is revered for his insights, intuition, and the use of his hands on the meridians points of the body for diagnosis. Everyone arrived excited, cheery, interested in the healer’s methods and what our predicted ailments ... read more

as not many tourists yet discovered or explored the beaches in Bali, I was finally able to do so.. The beach view is spectacular as not at all yet developed. It's so laidback! Tourists visiting the beach can be counted. No fancy restaurants, the only thing is a small warung (small restaurants). The beach is great for snorkling. It's beautiful beach! The beach is located on the east part of Bali toward candidasa further 5 more kilometer toward east in the village called perasi. The beach itsself called "pasir putih" beach... read more

So i have moved on from the awesomeness that is Ubud. In a beach area on the east coast called candi dasa. its dead. but yesterday i did go snorkling and, i have never done so, nor did i realize how not lame it is! i compared it to diving, so i thought that you could not really get a cool experiance out of it, with just your head on the surface. Crystal clear water...and NEON fish!! i wish i had an underwater camera but, i do not. I leave here tomorro morning, to Lovina, for a few days till im off to Java. Rented a motor bike today, and went around for 5 hours to little fishing villages, naked children playing in water everywhere. Matt would be in heaven. I'll end this kind of lame ... read more

So for our final 10 days it was off to Candi Dasa, a small village on the East coast of Bali. We had booked ahead after it was so busy in Ubud but actually changed places once we had looked around the village and found somewhere that was right by the sea, had better facilities and was cheaper!! We hadn't really planned on doing too much during our time here but lie in the sun and swim in the pool but as things turned out we ended up doing quite a few things. We astarted off with a couple of days in the sun but I was soon tempted into going on a fishing trip!! I have never fished in my life before but an Australian guy called Jim was keen to go out with the ... read more

hello my lovely dedicated readers (aka mum and dad). hope you are all well and enjoying the sun i am sure is shining oh so brightly at home. i am currently in wales, and the sun does not seem so intent on shining here. it's odd sort of weather really - it has not yet rained, yet the sky is stuck in an endless sulk, content to remain grey and cloudy in a sure-fire attempt to suck the soul out of anyone not totally accustomed to shitty weather. haha. nah, it's not that bad, i'm getting used to it really. but last night joe and tom (some friends i met when they were backpacking around australia) decided to have a party in the backyard, which was about 2 degrees. i have to give them credit, british ... read more

i was just looking over my last bali entry and i realised that i had missed out on talking about a totally amazing experience that i had whilst staying at a resort in candi dasa. one night there was a small gathering for one of the guests at the resort and, and i got chatting to the woman who owns it. she was talking about this treatment she does, which is something called vibrational healing, so i decided to try it out and see how it could work for me. from what i understand, the basic concept of vibrational healing is that the healer communicates with your body in a way which surpasses the conscious mind. the techniques are used in order to discover what the body truly desires, what it needs to rid itself of, ... read more

Our first port of call in Bali was the surf spot of Kuta. A very lively, touristy beach town packed with pro surfers and wannabe's like us! Not wanting to feel left out of the surfer scene we decided to book ourselves into Surf School and by the end of our first lesson we were both standing up riding the waves.. a little wobbly mind you but we were up and living the dream!! Our second lesson taught us how to paddle out into the waves head on... sending us flying off our boards! The waves were a little rough and we were left feeling very battered and bruised by the end of the second morning. The day of our third lesson brought very strong winds and an undercurrent that sent us sideways! Apparently Kuta was ... read more
