Today we hired a taxi for the day to show us around Delhi. Due to the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, we were unable to enter the Red Fort. We visited Raj Ghat where there is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. There is a marble platform with an eternal flame that marks the spot of his 1948 cremation.
From there we visited Humayun's tomb. At the entrance to the park we watched a cobra charmer. While visiting the tomb area we encountered our first monsoon! The rain came down in buckets. Humayun's tomb, which was the precursor to the Taj Mahal, was built in the 16th century.
Upon leaving Humayun's tomb and attempting to go to the Lotus tomb, we got caught up in a huge traffic jam, so diverted to the India Gate, which is a war memorial to Indian soldiers of World War I. After the India Gate we saw Rashtrapati Bhawan, which is the home of the President of India.
